ENGINE
VW air cooled TYPE 1 Engine - 2165cc (2.27Liters) Aluminum bubble top racing heavy duty engine case, Mahle 94mm pistons (.0795 deck height) flat top piston, H-Beam chromoly racing rods, Cam - FK41 Engle racing cam, Crank Shaft - 78mm counter balanced. Ideally uses racing fuel but will run fine on premium unleaded gasoline.
Cylinder Heads – GTV-2 CNC Wedge Ported Stage 3 racing cylinder heads. 44x37.5 valves. 9.3 : 1 ratio head compression. 51cc head volume. Added material around combustion chamber for deeper fly cutting, proper air-cooling passages to help keep the heads cool, 12mm 3/4" reach spark plug holes, competition dual valve springs, chromoly retainers, hard keepers, bronze guides, stainless steel valves and a 3-angle valve job. Modeled 130+ horsepower at 5000 RPM
Rocker Set - SCAT performance racing pro comp forged 1.40:1 rocker set. 4340 chromoly custom cut racing pushrods w/ SCAT 20018 performance 30mm billet lifters and stock style windage push rod tubes with tapered and enlarged inside diameter opening at the cylinder head for added performance clearance of the push rods. Geometry set by Car Craft – Riverside, CA
Engine Case - Aluminum alloy, fully CNC machined and blue printed. Raised roof design with added clearance for up to 84mm stroker crank shafts w/ fully connected rod clearance. Dual bypass, reinforced filled area behind #3 cylinder, reinforced head studs, full flow, 8mm case studs w/ case savers, main bearing saddle shuffle pins, enlarged oil pick up and sand seal
Crank Shaft - 78mm blue printed “stroker” crankshaft. Chromoly steel, forged and counterweighted with 8 dowel flywheel configurations. Clemex brand main bearing set model VW111.198.463MX
Camshaft - Engle FK41 racing clearance cut performance camshaft. Lift .510”, Duration 269 degrees, Cam lift .364”, Lob center 108 degrees. Rated for 1:4 and 1:5 rocker sets. Performance lifters with 30mm face. Silverline brand camshaft bearing set model VW 1300-1500-1600
Connecting Rods & Pistons - AA performance 4340 5.5" VW journal chromoly H-Beam connecting rods. Blue printed and balanced. Mahle brand rod bearings model VW113-105-707BR. Pistons - 94mm MAHLE cylinder and piston set with Teflon buttons. 8mm Bugpack chromoly 8mm cylinder/head studs w/ case savers. Grant 98-1194-B piston ring set. Pistons blue printed and balanced.
Oil Pump - 30mm aluminum high volume oil pump. Full flow connected using Teflon stainless steel aeronautics quality 8-AN hoses to K&N oil filter and then to oil cooler.
Timing Gear - Bugpack 4067-10 strait cut billet steel cam timing gear w/ adjustable timing washers (set at 0 degrees on this engine). Designed to provide less drag and increased horsepower. Reduces trust load on the cam bearings preventing premature bearing failure, which is common on high performance, high lift cams with dual head springs.
Engine Cooling - 36 mm (super-wide) VW fan TIG reinforce welded to handle high RPMs.
Engine Breather System - Custom breather can with 10-AN stainless-steel braided hoses connecting the oil neck and valve covers.
IGNITION SYSTEM
Distributor - Davis Unified Ignition (DUI) High Energy Ignition (HEI) distributor. The DUI is a one-piece, one wire distributor for Type 1 performance VW engines. This is a fully electronic distributor with no limits placed on it from external components. The DUI 50,000 volt internal coil allows spark plug gaps up to .055" . Larger gaps mean more powerful burns of the fuel mixture. The Dyna computer module, which is located inside the distributor, has more electronic dwell time built into it. The extra dwell time allows for more coil saturation time and a hotter spark. The heavy-duty cap is oversized to allow ample space to avoid spark jump which often occurs with a regular VW distributor cape at RPMs above 5,000. The DUI is custom calibrated on a distributor machine with a very smooth advance curve designed specifically for this sand rail engine. This leads to instant throttle response and prevents engine damaging detonation. MSD 8.5mm racing super conductor spark wire set. Specifically designed for HEI distributor applications. Spiral core w/ RFI suppression.
CARBURATION & FUEL DELIVERY
Carburetors – Dual Weber 48mm IDF carburetors. Stamped 4 (M6). With cross bar linkage, K&N (6X9X6) air filters and Outerwear pre-filters. The two-barrel 48mm IDF, is one of the most popular race proven performance level downdraft carburetors available for a VW Type 1 engine application.
Fuel - Spun aluminum 10-gal fuel tank. Custom fuel delivery using a screen pre-pump filter to a Holley “red” performance fuel pump on to an AC performance fuel filter w/ water separation & Holley low pressure fuel regulator. Stainless steel braided AN6 fuel hose delivery.
EXHAUST SYSTEM
Tri-Mil mid-engine polished silver ceramic coated exhaust system. 16-gauge steel 1 5/8” (1.625”) header merging to a 2 ½” collector tube. Maximum horsepower is achieved with a strait (un-muffled) stinger collector. Also uses a glass pack muffler in restricted areas. Manifold headers wrapped with 1500-degree DEI performance exhaust wrap. Mounted with CB Performance graphite (extreme heat/pressure) compression gaskets.
TRANSMISSION
Mid-Engine configuration - 1968 modified swing axle transmission designed for sand dunes Stamped case number: 8 VW 113 001 103. Rebuilt by Wright Gearbox of Riverside. NC hydraulic clutch, heavy duty left/right side covers, 17T side spider gears, 4.37 ring and pinion gear, FTC 1st 3.10 ratio, FTC 2nd 2.21 ration. welded close ratio 3rd & 4th gear. “Cable Shifter” brand performance shifter. Kennedy 2500lbs performance clutch pressure plate. Balanced flywheel with .005" of play, SCAT 4340 chromoly gland nut torqued to 400-foot pounds.
SUSPENSION & STEERING
Suspension hardware – Modified VW front end suspension. Rear VW swing axle with custom frame trailing arms. Shock absorbers - Front: Fox w/ 100 lbs. coil over and remote reservoir. Rear: Fox w/ 200 lbs. coil over and remote reservoir. 17" rear safety limit straps. Modified chrome VW steering box.
BRAKES & SAND TIRES
Brakes - CNC rear double caliper disk brakes (model LONG CNC-645L), (new August 2013) 3/16" (4.7mm) Poly Armor steel brake lines w/ braided stainless steel flex line & 2 PSI residual pressure value. Peddle assembly - CNC hydraulic pedal assembly (3/4 reservoir) w/ steering brake controls. In line 2PSI residual pressure valve.
Tires - Front: Polished aluminum “tear drop” design (left / right directional) rim w/ 6.75-15 Sand Viper tires. Rear: Polished aluminum rim with 13 – 15 Sand Tires Unlimited Padla.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Bosch chrome 75amp 12 volt alternator. Optima RED 12v battery with cut off switch. Independent central fuse panel. Gauges including: SunPro Super Tachometer III (model CP7905), oil pressure gauge, voltage gauge, VW red low oil pressure dummy light, VW yellow alternate dummy light. Fuel system and starter switches. HID front lights, rear marker lights, whip light & roof mounted LED strobe light.
Starter - Hi Torque Wosp gear starter
Pulley System - Titan chrome BDM serpentine belt pulley system. High quality solid piece billet 6061 T6 aluminum CNC machined. Idler roller is rated to 35,000 RPM. Crank pulley is a standard size 6 ¾” OD VW pulley. Generator pulley is 3 ¾”
