Engine needs to be rebuilt or replaced. ‘69 Chevy 396 has a frozen oil pump, an HEI distributor with a gear that has some missing teeth and quite possibly a cam with distributor drive teeth missing (not sure). It does turn over, but I expect that it needs new main and rod bearings plus likely the crank needs to be ground or replaced. You’re never sure what a rebuild entails until it’s completely torn down. I’ve never had the heads off the engine. Years ago, I’d have the engine out and be in the process of rebuilding. I’m too damned old to do this now.
It is NOT SMOG exempt. Currently registered in CA as a Special Construction Vehicle. Sale to somewhere without CA’s crazy smog laws would be best. It’s a long, frustrating story. Ask me and I’ll be glad to explain.
It has excellent Weld wheels and good tires plus these new parts: high-torque starter, 1-wire alternator, $500 Jet 35002 Stage 2 Quadra-jet carb.
It has a smooth shifting TH-400 transmission with a deep chrome after-market pan. It could probably use a front pump seal. Rear end is a 12-bolt Chevy with 2.73:1 gears.
It was a rare occasion that I drove it and did not get a wave, a honk or a thumbs up. It’s far from perfect, but it is eye-catching.
