The simplest way to determine the need for an acid wash is to decide if your pool is not the same color it was when you had it built. Was it White and now it's Blue? Was it Black and now it's Gray? Lots of things will change the color of your swimming pool plaster such as algae, leaves, calcium buildup, rust, black algae and so on. This can also cause it to hurt your feet when you are in your pool because the plaster gets rough from calcium build up. If you are dissatisfied with the appearance or feel of your pool plaster, an acid wash may be just the ticket.
What is an Acid Wash?
An acid wash is, put simply, a purposeful stripping of a tiny layer of plaster, exposing fresh pool plaster beneath. Most plaster coats (sometimes called whitecoat or marcite) are in excess of 1 1/2", so a few careful acid washes over the years should not hurt. Typically with the hard water here in San Diego you should expect to have an acid wash done every 5 or 6 years. You may also decide on an acid wash not because of swamp conditions, but if you are battling black algae or just to bring out a brighter, whiter finish. Mineral stains and/or deposits, chlorine stains, even dirt stains... an acid wash is always a dramatic aesthetic improvement.
