The Sulcata Rescue Ranch has several California desert tortoises ready to go to their new homes.
All are healthy and active, basking in our warm San Diego sunshine. But if you'd like to enjoy your new pet before they go down for their long winter nap (November-March) better hurry. There's a good hibernation guide on the website as well.
Reading the caresheet on my website, mysulcatarescue.org is required before being considered as a potential adopter.
To expedite the process please include pictures of where you'd be keeping the tortoise and the shelter that he'll need along with your phone number.
These special tortoises have the distinction of being our official state reptile. While they are on the endangered list in the wild they are prolific in captivity. It is illegal to buy or sell desert tortoises (or take them out of the desert) but it's perfectly legal to foster and adopt these wonderful, protected pets. Once adopted you will need to apply for a permit from the Dept of Fish and Wildlife. No fee and no hassle. Easy breezy.
