This vintage Metropolitan Museum of Art licensed reproduction is from the oil painting by Sir Thomas Lawrence titled "The Calmady Children" (1823) in their permanent collection since 1900. This large painting features young girls in a realistic style, capturing the theme of British domestic and family life. This piece showcases the artist's craftsmanship. "The rosy cheeks, rumpled chemises, and tumbling curls of Emily and Laura Anne Calmady reflect a new admiration for childhood and innocence that found expression in the portraiture of the early nineteenth century. Rather than depicting his sitters as miniature adults, Lawrence idealized the sweetness of youth and the affectionate bond between sisters. The artist once described the portrait as “my best picture . . . one of the few I should wish hereafter to be known by.” This piece of art is a valuable addition to any art collection.
The print is from The Met; we brought our antique frame to their framing studio in the 1980's and had them professionally frame it.
