History of Setta
Setta are traditional Japanese sandals that evolved as an improved version of zōri (straw sandals). Their origins date back to the Sengoku period (15th–16th century), and they are said to have been popularized by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Regent).
During the Edo period (17th–19th century), setta became widely used by both samurai and townspeople. Some variations featured metal fittings on the soles, creating a distinctive “karan-koron” sound when walking, which was considered stylish at the time. Skilled artisans continuously refined their construction, resulting in the durable and comfortable designs still found today.
In modern times, setta are not only worn with kimono or yukata but are also appreciated as fashionable and practical footwear. Traditional craftsmanship continues to thrive, offering high-quality setta that blend heritage with contemporary comfort.
