Antique Folk Art Shadow Box Diorama Masted Sailing Ship & Rigging 1892
This ship, "Xantha" was built in 1867 in England. Her name was changed in 1892 to “Sea Maid”, the name which is legible on the bow of this ship. This diorama was probably made around c.1893. She was sunk in 1942. The sky background is painted on the inner portion of an antique wood turned bowl as shown (in itself holds a good value). This was probably made by a sailor working on the ship. The outside of the frame is 18x21”, The view area circle is 12.5” wide. The image depth is about 4” deep. Very nice condition, however the glass was cracked and removed by me. I left it off to making photographing easier. The glass is easily replaced by removing 4 nuts and inserting glass about 13-15 inches square, you are welcome to the old glass if you wish.
