This intricate 3D shadow box is a vintage, traditional Japanese Oshie Kurumi-e Silk Kimono artwork, displayed in a sashimono frame. Showcasing the detail and beauty of handmade Japanese art, the Geisha with Fan made of kimono fabric reflects Japanese culture with its intricate design and craftsmanship. It is said that ladies of the court and geishas could not part with their beloved brocade kimonos when they began to wear out, so the fabric was given to palace artisans. Since the Edo period, these masters of Oshie Kurumi-e (translates to "pressed picture") used layers of padded damask to make puzzle-like collages featuring aristocratic women, children, actors, warriors and of course Geishas.

This unique piece of Japanese collectible textile art would make a stunning addition to any collection of Japanese and Asian art, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Japan.

The sashimono frame (a traditional form of Japanese woodworking joinery, "Sashimono involves crafting picture frames and other wooden items without the use of nails, screws, or glue. Instead, it relies on intricate interlocking joints, called Kumiki, and precise cuts to assemble the wooden pieces. This technique is highly valued for its durability, precision, and aesthetic appeal.") measures 16.5" x 17.75"

This was a gift given to my grandfather when his Japanese counterpart visited their company's factories in America. On other trips, he brought high-end gifts like Mikimoto pearls, so this was obviously a precious item.

Professionally framed, matted and glazed.

Smoke-free home.
