Assistant Editor - Academic Publishing Company (Kearny Mesa)

Plural Publishing, Inc. is a small and growing company that produces leading academic and professional books in the fields of speech-language pathology, audiology, special education, otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, and singing. We employ a dedicated and committed team of professionals who take great pride in our authors and our publications. We work with prestigious academic and professional authors and accordingly expect our team to have solid written and verbal skills. We are looking for an Assistant Editor to join the team and help us continue to deliver the very best in publishing.

This is a full-time position (M-F 8 a.m. to 5 p.m) located in our San Diego office.

Reporting to the Executive Editor, the Assistant Editor (AE) is a hybrid role in the Editorial department and is responsible for editorial and project support as well as acquiring new products and securing revisions of successful titles. The AE supports the editorial team in its functions of processing received manuscripts, preparing contract packages, and performing other tasks such as market research, product data management, and creating and distributing editorial schedules and reports. Under close mentorship, guidance, and supervision of the Executive Editor, the AE will acquire new titles to grow the company’s publishing program and secure timely revisions of proven products. The AE oversees the publishing process for each acquired title, which includes collaborating with the Executive Editor, Project Editor, and the production, marketing, and sales teams.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Editorial duties:

*Assist with the accurate and timely processing of manuscripts.
*Respond effectively and in a timely manner to queries from authors.
*Act as a key member of the Editorial team on cross-departmental or company-wide projects.
*Participate in new book launch meetings.
*Delegate tasks and special projects to editorial staff, freelancers, and interns.
*Assist Executive Editor with troubleshooting problems.
*Assist in educating Sales and Marketing on new products and partner with them to develop strategic promotional plans.
*Use company systems/software for product data management and reporting.
*Contribute to the ongoing assessment and improvement of Editorial procedures and standards.
*Other duties as assigned.

Acquisitions duties:

With training, guidance, and supervision of the Executive Editor:

*Acquire new books in assigned areas.
*Prepare and negotiate new contracts and revision amendments.
*Develop dynamic and ongoing relationships with authors, editors, key advisors, and reviewers through consistent communications via e-mail, phone, and in-person meetings at conferences.
*Implement online product surveys and obtain reviews of new product proposals.
*Develop and present new products for approval to Plural Publications Committee.
*Handle unsolicited proposals across disciplines as assigned by Executive Editor.
*Assist the Executive Editor with any potential distribution agreements for all Plural subjects.
*Coordinate marketing and sales activities between the publisher and authors.
*Develop an appropriate level of understanding of assigned disciplines (topics, market size, associations, institutions, faculty, curriculum, trends, needs, etc.)
*Build knowledge and understanding of trends in the academic book publishing industry.
*Attend professional conferences to promote and acquire new products.
*Other duties as assigned.

Desired Attributes, Skills, and Experience:

*Bachelor's degree - required
*Five years of office experience (This is not an entry-level role for recent college graduates.)
*Publishing experience a plus
*Detail-oriented and able to produce accurate, high-quality work
*Strong oral and written communication skills and influencing skills
*Strong analytical skills and judgment
*An entrepreneurial spirit and demonstrable interest in academic book publishing
*Ability to learn quickly and meet deadlines and goals
*Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team
*Excellent organizational skills and ability to juggle multiple competing priorities independently and delegate appropriately
*Ability to excel in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
*Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and other typical workplace software
