Meter readers primarily visit residential and commercial properties to read water, gas, electric, or steam meters and record the data for billing purposes. Their duties include:
Collecting and recording meter readings using handheld devices, route books, or other recording methods.
Inspecting meters for damage, tampering, defects, or malfunctions and reporting irregularities to the utility company.

Verifying unusual readings and investigating abnormal consumption patterns to prevent billing errors.
Following safety procedures to navigate hazards such as animals, inclement weather, or difficult terrain.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Successful meter readers typically possess:
Physical stamina to walk or drive along routes for extended periods, often outdoors in all weather conditions.
Attention to detail to accurately record readings and detect inconsistencies or tampering.
Basic mathematical skills for calculating usage and monitoring trends.
