Orig. Historic San Diego Photo: Burnett’s Fire, 1955. Current site of Whole Foods Market
A large (20”x 23.5”) original photograph (not lithograph). Mounted on stiff paperboard. Almost none of the background buildings are still standing.
This appears to be a unique, original one-of-of-kind photo. There are a few other photos online of this same fire, but not this one.
Burnett’s Fire, 1955, in Hillcrest. The Burnett Furniture Company was at the current site of Whole Foods Market, at the corner of University and 7th Ave’s. The photo is looking southwest, and down upon University Ave and 7th Ave. (6th Ave is the large street running diagonally in the top part of the photo.)

“San Diego's first million-dollar fire erupted on Jan. 3, 1955. The three-alarm fire at the Burnett Furniture Company at Seventh and University avenues was fought by more than 100 San Diego firefighters. Several firefighters were injured and overcome by smoke, including the Assistant Fire Chief. At the height of the fire, Fire Chief George Courser ordered three crews off the southwest corner of the roof. The Chief was the last to leave and the roof partially collapsed just as he jumped off.”
