S�lheimar Eco-village, founded in 1930, is the first community of its kind in the world where so-called able and disabled people live and work together. Inspired by the theories of Rudolf Steiner, S�lheimar has focused on cultivating the individual and the environmental, and is the first community in Scandinavia to practice organic cultivation. Today, S�lheimar (The home of the sun) is a charming village of about 100 inhabitants, renowned for its international, artistic and ecological atmosphere, which prides itself on its varied cultural, social and sporting activities. The village is only one hour drive from Reykjavik.

The volunteers have free access to the swimming pool and gym. Volunteers are also encouraged to take part in social happenings in S�lheimar like in sports, music, the theatre group, etc. S�lheimar Arts Summer festival will last until the beginning of August. The program is varied with all sorts of arts exhibitions, an outdoor market, and theatre and cabaret performances at 4 o�clock every Saturday and every Sunday in the theatre and caf� Gr�na Kannan. Volunteers are welcome to participate in the singing groups and cabarets.

In �lur forestry centre, the only organic reforestation centre in Iceland, the volunteers will plant trees and construct paths. The group will also help in Sunna organic cultivation centre: plant vegetables, dig the weeds and other kind of gardening work. Other tasks will be decided according to the need of the community.

Volunteer project: The volunteer project will take place on an island on the Red River next to Hanoi. The people on this island are living in very old slum boats and have no fresh water and electricity. They have to use dirty water from the Red River. International volunteers, with the help of local volunteers, are expected to make �water filters� and give them to the poor people. Volunteers will experience the peaceful scenery of Hanoi City and the nice Long Bien Bridge (the most historical bridge in Vietnam). After your project, the local people will have better living conditions. Besides working, volunteers will organize some games and football matches for the local youth and children on the beach by the Red River.

Special requirements: Volunteers will work in a different social and cultural environment and have to be flexible. They are expected to be motivated and to participate actively.

Project language: English

Location: About 7 km north from Viet Tri City and 90 km north from Hanoi Capital.

A team of international volunteers will help them in their daily job of making simple hand-made products. The volunteers are expected to create a friendly English-speaking environment to help the people learn and communicate in English, as well as feel confident. The volunteers will use local bus and/or second hand bicycles for their transport to and from the work site.

Volunteer project: The international volunteers will renovate school bookshelves (painting, renovating), teach English, and promote personal hygiene.

Sidorejo Village is part of the Kajoran Sub-district of the Magelang Regency in Central Java. The village is located 25 km north of Yogyakarta and 86 km south of Semarang. The Mageland regency is known at international level as the residence of Borobudur and Prambanan Temples. Most of the villagers are farmers and the households can mainly be considered as low income ones. Through this project, the volunteers will support the educational development of the children and the youngsters of Sidorejo by supporting the local school and providing different courses (English, hygiene, environmental education, etc).

Study theme: The volunteers will be introduced to the Indonesian culture and customs in general, with a special focus on the Javanese particularities. Some cultural visits are also foreseen.

Sometimes mood and sleep disorders are linked and CPAP users are also prescribed an anti-depressant� If you are currently using a CPAP machine and are on an anti-depressant, but are tired during the day, please read on.

We are researching a currently marketed medication used to treat excessive daytime sleepiness in people with sleep apnea who are also taking Prozac�, Paxil�, Lexapro�, Celexa�, or Zoloft�. Our research grant covers the cost of study medication and all related procedures � no insurance company is billed. The study is 3 months long and includes 1 telephone call and 5 office visits; there are a few overnight stays and a couple of daytime sleepiness tests along with evaluations, physicals, lab work and study related questionnaires. Joel Dimsdale, M.D. and his associates in the UCSD Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Medicine are conducting a research study to examine blood pressure and sleep apnea, a disease marked by interruptions in breathing while you sleep.

Who May Qualify:

The conditions in TJ for the stray animals are heart breaking, the poverty there creates an environment of uncontrolled breeding and disease. Thanks to our supporters, we are able to continue our efforts in Tijuana.

Join our team of educators at Birch Aquarium at Scripps, UC San Diego and work with youth ages 4-15, in our 2008 Summer Learning Adventure Camps. Our education programs are designed to incorporate hands-on learning experiences with Scripps Institution of Oceanography research. You will work with the education team at the aquarium, and at local beaches and state parks. We offer many programs from fish dissections and making crafts, to snorkeling and kayaking. A summer at Birch Aquarium at Scripps is sure to boost any resume.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The International Rescue Committee, a San Diego non-profit dedicated to assisting refugees and victims of war, coordinates this summer program at Crawford High School. Most of our students are from East Africa and Southeast Asia.

As an intern you will be helping students during summer classes in English, Math, and various other elective classes. There will also be opportunities to participate with the students during field trips and other enrichment activities.

We can help you get school credit for your experience!

A Big Pal is a caring Jewish adult, age 19 or older, who shares a one-to-one mentoring relationship with a child. Through a wide range of activities, a Big Pal helps a child develop self-esteem, Jewish identity, and a meaningful relationship.

Qualifications:

Duties:

Cozy Cafe
Manage the coffee cart while getting to know the seniors. Feel free to organize discussions or just schmooze with the members. This position is ideal for someone who likes to visit with others and is outgoing. Hours: 9:00-11:00am

Serving Lunch and Coffee
Assist with serving lunch to seniors for � hour to one hour. Volunteers must be able to carry plates and serve tableside. Volunteers are also needed to serve coffee and tea during lunch.

Hostess- Dining Room
Greet seniors as they come in for lunch and collect money. Pass out meal tickets before they enter the dining room. Time required: 2 hour shift (quiet for first hour and then gets busier)

Library
Assist in staffing the library. Library is open for one hour before lunch. This is a quiet job for someone who does not mind reading a book and waiting for someone to stop by.

Computer Lab
Help seniors by giving one hour private lesions! Teachings include: how to use a mouse and keyboard, internet tips, emailing, using a word program, etc.
Chaperoning Day/Evening Outings
Chaperone anywhere from 10 to 50 seniors on outings around San Diego including: plays, trips to the symphony, casinos, shopping trips. Time required: as needed.

Wema Center is a community project and a rehabilitation program for young street girls. The home was established in 1993 and is registered as a non-governmental organization in Kenya. The Center has a residential capacity for up to 110 children. The non-residential program can accommodate up to 400 children, including young women in the vocational training section. The program currently takes care of 310 children and aims to take in more, if funds allow. The mission of the Center is to rehabilitate and facilitate the development of vulnerable children and youth at risk towards sustainability, human dignity and self-reliance, to restore hope for the lost, and also help former street children acquire birth certificates and ID cards.
Volunteers' major duties include:
� Responsible for day-to-day co-ordination of the Center to ensure efficient performance of the organization operation.
� Counseling of the children
� Teaching the children
The volunteers will be working from Monday to Saturday, Monday to Friday - 5 hours a day and Saturday - 2 hours.

Special requirements: The Center requires female volunteers only. The minimum age of the volunteer should be 25 years. Volunteer(s) with sociology, counseling and teaching skills are needed; preferably a social worker, a counselor or a teacher. However, we have an open policy and applicants with other ideas to share are also welcome to apply and will be considered. Volunteers need to contribute/initiate ideas and by that would be promoting the growth of the Home. This is an opportunity for the volunteers to work at a community/grassroot level in capacity building and training in self-sustainability. Rainwater harvesting and awareness projects in a rural area in South India

Volunteer project: Moodabidri is a small town situated 40 km from Mangalore coast in south India. It has a wonderful history of the jain community and has one of the most interesting jain temples in the region, one of them being the famous 1000 pillar temple. The area is an agricultural settlement and the region grows paddy, coconuts, arecanuts, black pepper, vanilla, exotic varieties of mangoes, exotic varieties of bananas and the famous tasty cashew nuts. Over a period of time the region has been facing a lot of water shortage and the region now is facing a receding agriculture practice as a result of the shortage of water.

Year 2003 was the beginning of an initiative to implement rainwater harvesting awareness programmes in the form of trying to set up a rainwater harvesting model in the region. Several volunteer projects were organized with the rainwater harvesting theme, and almost successfully completed such model in one of the villages of Moodabidri. Volunteers who participated in the workcamp dug hundreds of trenches to stand the water so that it percolates into the soil and increases the water table of the surrounding area/region.

International volunteer groups this year will continue the same project, along with the idea of having awareness programmes in schools in the region. The volunteers will be mostly involved in physical work at the rainwater harvesting projects and will also participate in creative activities in the neighbouring schools to revive the dying wisdom of rainwater harvesting.

Now in it�s 5th year, the Sankofa Center for African Dance & Culture, an official 501(c)3 U.S.-based charitable organization is searching for artistic, teaching, and health-based volunteers for our up-coming 2008 arts-based HIV/AIDS education programs in Ghana, West Africa & other international destinations.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

In Conjunction with UCLA Department of African Studies Research, S.C.A.D.C. fuses traditional African dance, drama, & other art forms with health information to educate Ghanaian youths & adults about HIV/AIDS. These very necessary performances are both entertaining & educational. Our program utilizes the vibrant energies of our volunteers & local team to tour various villages & schools to help eradicate AIDS in Africa through art! We also conduct free rapid HIV testing in our village outreach to link those needing treatment with medical care. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Individuals with a background in the arts, dance, drama, theatre, music, public health, medicine, and related fields are encouraged to apply. However, volunteers are not necessarily required to be performers. A major aspect of our work is teaching & counseling sexual health topics to village youth so applicants possessing peer health education skills are needed. We will train you if you lack the background. Assistants for pre-post counseling and rapid HIV testing are also needed, we can train appropriate applicants on the procedures as well. Our Programs vary but as a volunteer you will be actively involved in the artistic presentation of our HIV/AIDS health campaigns through your specified program.

Volunteers will develop many activities depending on their skills and experiences, their interests, their specialties, but in general, the activities are these:
To develop the education program to help youth.
To implement workshops: like handicraft, bakery, etc�
Music, dance, and paint workshops.

This project is organized in cooperation with the local organization Hogar Luz in the city of Ayacucho Peru, they work with children from 1 month old to 17 year old, by providing home and food as well as promoting good habits (hygiene, education, etc) with the objective to give them better possibilities for their future.
Volunteers will work every day with around 38 children of Ayacucho

Age range: 18 and over
