Compassionate Ministries—Professional Payee Services began after recognizing a recurring need for financial guidance and clinical services among the chronically disabled and poor. In response to this need we decided to do all we can to demonstrate Christian compassion and love to those who are homeless, struggle with a mental disability, and are in need of a treatment program to break the bondage of addiction.
As a resident of San Diego County you should know that our efforts to curb homelessness and help those with mental disorders and/or addictions to experience a better quality of life, are primarily geared toward those residing in San Diego County. Our representative payee service does extend throughout the state of California. Compassionate Ministries—Professional Payee Services, Inc. has been approved as a non-profit organization by the state of California and recognized as a 501c(3) charitable organization by the IRS. As a charitable organization we rely primarily on tax-deductible contributions to meet operating expenses and develop our treatment programs.
We are grateful for both "In-kind" donations such as material goods, non-perishable foods, and office supplies, etc. as well as monetary donations to help with expenses.
What are we doing with In-kind and monetary donations? Compassionate Ministries—Professional Payee Services, Inc. is currently serving as a representative payee for about 75 disabled clients at no charge. We manage their funds by opening bank accounts, paying vendors and landlords to ensure shelter is maintained and food attained by all those under our service.
Moreover, we are helping to support Luke’s House. A sober living environment for dually diagnosed men. With the help of a Director, and house managers we have developed a network of care for many people in need. Everyday we equip 10-12 men to live a better quality of life through Christian based recovery programs, structured day programs, and Bible studies that are filled with indiscriminate love and compassion. The difference is in the intention: Are you in service (taking care) or is there a payoff (caretaking)? Payoffs are usually subtle. Caretaking may help you relieve guilt, feel better about yourself, calm your anxiety in the short term, or get attention or validation. But there is a cost to caretaking, as well: Caretaking can result in resentments, emotional and physical depletion, and/or feeling disconnected from your inner self. Complete this questionnaire by answering true or false to discover how much caretaking you do.

READ/San Diego is the adult literacy program for the San Diego Public Library. We offer services in all communities in the City of San Diego. We train volunteer tutors to teach adults basic literacy skills. Our adult learners are English speaking and below the high school level in reading, writing and/or math.
To qualify, a volunteer:
▪ must be 18 years of age or older
▪ must have good reading and writing skills
▪ must have three to five hours of time each week to volunteer (includes time for travel,
lesson preparation, and tutoring)
▪ must make a minimum of a six month commitment to your assigned adult learner
As a volunteer you will:
▪ be provided a 15 hour training
▪ be provided tutoring materials and books
▪ meet an adult learner twice a week, for an hour and a half each session
▪ meet at the public library or one of our learning centers
▪ have on-going support from the literacy professionals on staff at READ/San Diego

There is a writer's saying: "How can I know what I think until I see what I say?" This can be called the "shaping at the point of utterance."
The same principle applies to life in general and to therapy, in particular. Discussing one's thoughts, feelings, conflicts, and problems with another person is usually a great help, especially is that person is professionally trained, caring, smart, sensitive, and objective. In talking with a therapist who is a neutral presence, a person can explore his/her difficulties and concerns in a safe, healing environment. In fact, airing your thinking aloud with a professional, detached, focused, and yet, compassionate second ear helps you to get clearer about your emotions, rethink chronic problems and anxieties, and live in a more aware state. The next time you find yourself (choose one of the following, or substitute your own problem here) depressed, anxious, creatively blocked, in conflict with your mate, struggling with your interpersonal relations, or engaging in an unhealthy behavior like reaching for a drink, or some fattening food, you may be better able to understand why you are driven to do so, and make conscious some connections that were previously unconscious. What just happened to trigger the feeling or the injurious behavior? Why did it occur then? Does it always have to happen like that? What can you do to prevent it from repeating itself again and again?
Self awareness and understanding are necessary first steps to turning such uncomfortable, unproductive, and harmful behaviors around. Real change can only follow from increased self-understanding. And it is such real changes that finally allow you to free yourself from chronic problems and live your life with greater pleasure and freedom.
