CAMPUS POLICE OFFICER
RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the administration of the Chief of Police and supervision of an assigned Sergeant, patrol the campuses of the Southwestern Community College District to provide for the safety and security of all persons; ensure enforcement of California’s Penal and Vehicle Codes, and all other applicable statues, codes, District policies and directives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Patrol on-and-off campus sites including but not limited to buildings, classrooms, rest rooms and parking lots by foot, electric cart, vehicle, or other mode of transportation in order to maintain security and order; control the parking and safe movement of vehicles in parking areas and access roads; interview and take appropriate action to assist crime victims; record and document incidents; prepare reports relating to observed violations, including arrest reports, criminal and traffic citation notices to appear, arrest reports, and property/evidence reports; appear in court as a witness or as an arresting officer as required; prevent entry and report presence of unauthorized persons on grounds or in buildings; monitor and implement emergency operations procedures in time of disaster; inspect, identify, document, and follow up on potential hazards; provide CPR and First Aid as needed; attend agency specific and P.O.S.T. mandated training as needed/required. OTHER DUTIES: Provide information to visitors, students and staff; work closely with law enforcement agencies, administration, faculty, and staff; make presentations on campus safety to groups; participate in crime prevention work; provide work direction to student workers and others.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: MUST HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF: California Penal Code, Vehicle Code, Health & Safety Code, Welfare & Institution Code and Business & Professions Code; law enforcement methods, including laws of arrest, probable cause, search & seizure, tactical communication, defensive tactics, tactical response and officer safety techniques; record-keeping and report writing techniques; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. MUST HAVE ABILITY TO: Work independently with little direction; analyze situations likely to be encountered on patrols; observe and retain names, faces and details of occurrences; understand and work within scope of authority; apply applicable codes and District policies; remain alert at all times; maintain high ethical standards and behavior; learn applicable District rules, regulations, policies and procedures; communicate tactfully and effectively with students, staff and faculty; use discretion in handling difficult persons; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; observe legal and defensive driving practices; understand and correct emergency alarm systems; operate equipment such as two-way radio, camera, time clock system, cite writers, typewriter, computer and copier; interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
LICENSES AND REQUIREMENTS: Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent; possess a Commission on POST Regular Basic Academy Certificate*, Basic Certificate or higher, or proof of current employment as a police officer or deputy sheriff; valid California Driver’s License; valid CPR and First Aid card. Ability to successfully complete a thorough background and pass the pre-employment psychological, Computer Voice Stress Analysis and physical examinations per Government Code 1031. *Applicants in the final phase of a POST approved Basic Academy will be considered with a letter of good standing from the Basic Academy Director.
UNIFORMS / EQUIPMENT: The job requires that officers be uniformed during the hours of duty. The employer provides all uniforms, safety and operational equipment; maintenance of uniforms provided by employer through dry cleaning contract.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. ENVIRONMENT: Most patrol will occur in an indoor and outdoor environment located on a lush landscaped main campus designed with an open plan; work requires being on-call during off-duty hours. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Essential and marginal functions may require maintaing physical condition necessary for apprehension of suspects, walking and running over rough or uneven terrain or surfaces, bending at the waist; kneeling or crouching; hearing and speaking to exchange information and making presentations; operating motorized equipment, automobile, electric car, or other modes of transportation. HAZARDS: Adverse weather conditions; work involves potentially dangerous situations and contact with hostile or abusive individuals and responding to emergencies.
SALARY & BENEFITS:
R. 21, Step 1-6, $3,697.00 - $4,500.00 per month. Initial placement for external applicants is step 1. An excellent benefits package which includes medical, vision, dental, retirement, vacation, generous sick leave package, and life insurance is available for the employee and eligible dependents.
WORKING DAYS & HOURS:
Hours may vary according to the police department needs. Applicants must be willing to work nights, graveyards, weekends and holidays as required.
