Meeting individualized educational needs in a therapeutic setting

The TERI Learning Academy serves students with developmental disabilities, 8 to 22 years of age. The Learning Academy is specifically designed to provide one-on-one educational and therapeutic programs to students, primarily those with autism, whose behavior precludes their inclusion in public school or other private special education programs. The program includes vocational, academic, daily living skills, and intensive behavioral supports. It is designed to assist students in reintegrating into their home school district or less intensive settings as appropriate, and the staff are highly trained and qualified to serve this unique population. Included in the curriculum is individualized consultation for physical therapy, nursing, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and psychological services. The Learning Academy students are referred by their home district, which incurs the cost of placement.

Student's daily schedules are specifically designed to meet each student's individualized needs. Students are provided with 1:1 instruction in community settings at least weekly, as well as offered sensory integration therapy, social skills training, therapeutic equestrian services, music therapy, swimming therapy.

Under the supervision of the Disabilities Specialist, the Inclusion Technician is responsible for providing support to the center staff, parents, and children with disabilities in activities designed to promote social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to curriculum development and implementation, promotion of positive inclusion, and the assurance of safety of all children.

Education and/or Experience

Therapeutic Behavioral Services (TBS) is an intense behavioral modification program designed to teach children and adolescents new behavioral interventions and strategies to better manage the severe behaviors they display within their placement. TBS is a program contracted through the county of San Diego and is therefore assigned referrals by the county of San Diego TBS program, whom also closely monitors our program. The clients that are referred to TBS are either at-risk for losing their placement to a higher level of care or being hospitalized as a result of the severity of their behaviors. TBS provides coaching and case management to these clients due to the severity of their behaviors. Based on a residential model, TBS provides services 365 days with the exception of when clients are in school, in juvenile hall or hospitalized.

� Checks each infant/toddler upon arrival to insure that the child is in good health. The child must be free of fever, vomiting, and less obvious indications of not being well. If a child has been absent due to illness, particular attention must be paid to the health check. An unwell child may not be admitted.

� Completes all required records and files any information on children and personnel.

� Maintains a safe environment for the children in his/her care at all times.

� Observes and diagnoses each child�s needs, motivational patterns, potential, strengths and weaknesses, and social progress within the group.

� Plans individual and group activities based on the needs of the children to stimulate growth in cognitive, emotional, physical and social skills. Works with the Assistant Director and Director to observe and assess developmental needs of the children.

� Attends all staff meetings, conferences and recommended training programs.

� Assists infants/toddlers in learning the beginning practices of personal cleanliness and self care as appropriate. Helps infant/toddleers to develop habits picking up and putting away toys and sharing in care of the environment.

� Creates and implements lesson plans and schedules parent conferences as needed. Organizes a daily lesson plan, with clear learning objectives.

� Prepares for school events.

� Completes all paperwork in required time frames.

� Helps with general housekeeping tasks as assigned.

� Performs naptime duties.

� Keeps any discussion of childrens behavior confidential and brings any concerns to the Director.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Minimum of:
� Completion of the 12 unit Child Development Core, including six (6) semester units in curriculum; three (3) semester units in Child Growth & Development; three (3) semester units in Child, Family and Community;
� Completion of 3 units of Infant/Toddler Development.

Preferred:
� A.A. degree in Child Development or Early Childhood Education including the courses listed above, and with at least one year work experiences in a licensed child care center or comparable group child care program.
Alternative:
� Completion of an ROP Certificate of Training in Child Care Occupations
� Completion of 3 units of Infant/Toddler Development
� Teachers hired with the ROP Certificate make satisfactory progress towards meeting the educational requirement for a fully qualified teacher by enrolling and achieving passing grades in at least two three-unit child development/ECE courses each semester until the fully qualified Teacher educational requirement is satisfied.
