You may qualify for medication treatment at no cost
What Type of Study Is This?
*Dr. Martin Paulus at UCSD is conducting a brain imaging research study that may provide medication treatment at not cost for individuals experiencing excessive anxiety and worry.
*This is a research study to evaluate the usefulness of functional MRI to measure brain response to a known, FDA approved, marketed anti-anxiety medication.
The study will examine areas of the brain that process emotion.
What Does the Study Involve?
*A pre-study screening medical exam that takes about 4 hours.
*If you are eligible and choose to participate, you will be scheduled for up to 6 office visits. There will be at least 3 additional phone contacts.
*You will receive either a study drug or a placebo (inactive pill with no medication in it) for 4 weeks.
*You will be asked to complete tasks inside and outside a Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine during some of your clinic visits.
What are the Benefits?
*Helping others by contributing to medical research.
*Obtaining expert medical care at the leading health care facility during the study.
*Upon study completion, further treatment recommendations will be provided.
*You will be reimbursed up to $700 for participation.
What are the Possible Risks?
*Side effects or adverse reactions to medication.
*The treatment may be ineffective.
*You may experience some discomfort in the MRI scanner.
*You may experience an emotional response to the behavioral tasks.
Who Can Participate?
*Adults between the ages of 18-65 who:
*Have excessive worry or anxiety most days for the past 3 months
*Are in good health
*Are right-handed
*Agree to stop taking mood medication 2 weeks before beginning study
*Are not claustrophobic or pregnant
*Have no metal in the head or spine (though most dental work is okay)
