FBI Stooges Seize Global Indymedia Servers (Editor's Note: Using the Phony War on Terrorism as an excuse and the PATRIOT sic Act as a rationale, the War Against the Freedom of the Press in America has once again been ratcheted up.)
The FBI took the hard drives of Global IMC servers in the USA and the UK. It appears that a court order was issued to Rackspace (Indymedia's service provider with offices in the US and in London) to physically remove the hard drives from Global Indymedia servers (backup servers are now in place).
Rackspace was given no time to defend against the order before it was acted upon and turned over the hard drives, both in the US and the UK. The servers hosted numerous local IMCs, including UK Indymedia, Belgium, African imcs, Palestine, UK, Germany, Brasil, Italy, Uruguay, Poland, Belgrade, Portugal and others.

A week after the FBI disrupted about twenty Web sites operated by local chapters of the Indymedia network, there is still no clear explanation as to why agents seized some of the radical news organizations' servers. Yesterday, agents returned both of the confiscated computer hard drives used to house the affected sites to Rackspace, the U.S.-based Web hosting company that owns them. But Indymedia and supporters say the return of the equipment raises more questions than it answers.
Last Thursday, agents from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation seized the two hard drives from Rackspace's London offices. Rackspace said had they complied with a subpoena and turned over the devices, used by some Indymedia Web sites in Europe, the United States, Africa and South America. According to initial news reports, the subpoena was exercised by the FBI in cooperation with the governments of Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Italy.
Last week's action against Indymedia, a grassroots, non-hierarchical global media network, effectively shut down sites operated from four continents. As of press time, most of the sites are back up and running, though six – including one in western Massachusetts – remain inactive. Indymedia spokesperson David Meieran said many of the sites were running within the first 24 hours as mirrors and temporary replacement servers were arranged by Indymedia centers throughout the world.
Due to questions about the returned drives' integrity, Indymedia is considering them "compromised" and not currently using them, said Meieran. He said it is unlikely that the drives will be used until the reasons for the seizure and the extent of the investigation are determined.
For its part, the FBI has denied having any connection to the seizure outside of assisting in the initial subpoena execution. FBI spokesperson Joe Parris told Agence France-Presse that the request to seize the drives came from a "third party." The FBI told The NewStandard that Switzerland was the source of the request and directed further inquiries to Geneva.
The Swiss government, however, has told European media outlets that it did not request the servers. Swiss federal prosecutor Daniel Zapelli did say, however, that they were investigating the Indymedia coverage of last year's G8 protest in Evian, though he declined to offer specifics.
According to Meieran, many Indymedia volunteers initially suspected the Swiss government had pushed for last Thursday's seizure after Indymedia rebuffed a month-old request, delivered by the FBI, for the removal of pictures showing undercover Swiss police officers photographing protesters. But Meieran cautioned that all the theories are just speculation at this point.
Now that the hard drives have been returned, Meieran said, Indymedia and those committed to free speech need to keep pushing to find out why they were seized and guard against a recurrence.
"We're putting together a call for consolidating the efforts of the groups and people who support us," Meieran said. "We are creating a Web site with a petition so we can find out why this happened and if any international laws were broken.
"Also – and this is far more important – we want to make sure this doesn't happen again," Meieran added.
Whatever the cause, many groups have stepped forward to condemn the seizure and offer support to Indymedia. The American Civil Liberties Union, Reporters Without Borders, the International Federation of Journalists, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Project Censored and Dutch and Belgian journalism associations have all offered a variety of assistance.
In an official statement, the general secretary of the International Federation of Journalists, Adrian White, said: "We have witnessed an intolerable and intrusive international police action against a network specializing in independent journalism. The way this has been done smacks more of intimidation of legitimate journalistic inquiry than crime-busting. The seizing of computers and the high profile nature of this incident suggests that someone wanted to stifle these independent voices in journalism. We need a full investigation into why this action took place, who took part and who authorized it."
Peter Phillips, director of the Sonoma University-based Project Censored, said in a press statement: "This is an indication of the successfulness of the Indymedia network. Freedom of information is a radical idea when applied in a fair manner. Radical ideas will always be suppressed by the transnational corporate elites whenever possible. We must act on our right to freedom of information to keep it safe, and when repressed find new channels and means to succeed."
Reporters Without Borders issued a similar call. According to a press release from the journalists' advocacy organization, letters seeking an explanation for the action were sent to government officials in the UK, U.S., Switzerland and Italy.
Lawyers with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a digital rights advocacy group, have contacted both the FBI and officials with Rackspace in an effort to assist Indymedia. As of press time, the group said neither the FBI nor the company had addressed their inquiries.
Meieran says EFF lawyers are the only ones currently representing Indymedia as a whole, though, he says, the UK Indymedia and associates in Europe have retained separate counsel.
This is not the first instance of government interference with Indymedia's activities. Directly before the Republican National Convention in New York City, four Indymedia administrators and their Web hosting company were questioned by the Secret Service in response to an anonymous post on the New York City Indymedia Web site that carried the names of convention delegates and the hotels in which they were staying.
Indymedia targeted
ON 22 January 2009, KENT POLICE seized an INDEPENDENT MEDIA CENTRE server hosted by MANCHESTER-based company, UK GRID, in relation to a comment published on the news web site.
The raid in which the server was seized is an attack on free speech and independent journalism in the UK, and especially on the grassroots open-publishing platform that is Indymedia.
In the morning of the 22nd, KENT POLICE emailed Indymedia UK requesting that personal information about Justice Neil Butterfield, the judge overseeing the STOP HUNTINGDON ANIMAL CRUELTY (SHAC) trial, be removed from a comment to a report published on the Indymedia website and that details of the poster be retained.
Indymedia UK volunteers had already removed the information from the report in line with the project’s own privacy policy. Indymedia UK was unable to comply with Kent Police’s request to retain data relating to poster. As an open publishing project, Indymedia UK does not keep logs of the server activity.
Nevertheless, Police seized the machine which was handed over by the management of UK Grid. No search warrant was shown.
The loss of a server represents serious damage to the Indymedia infrastructure in the UK.
Several websites including the global Indymedia documentation project, the new website of Indymedia London, la Soja Mata (an anti-GM soya campaign focusing on South American development), Transition Sheffield and a Canadian campaign against the 2010 olympics were affected.
Background:
The present case is not the first time that Indymedia servers were seized in the UK. Shortly before the opening of the European Social Forum in 2004 in London, a main Indymedia server was seized from the hosting company Rackspace in an operation which involved an Italian Judge, an American District Court and the FBI.
In 2005, the server of Indymedia Bristol was seized under a search warrant. One Indymedia Bristol volunteer was arrested on suspicion of incitement to criminal damage, but was never charged.
As in previous cases, Indymedia UK stayed online this time. This was possible due to a system of ‘mirrors’, which was set up to protect the technical infrastructure of the alternative media project. Despite the resource intensive interruptions caused by server seizures, the independent media activists continue to provide a platform for “news straight from the streets”.

LEXINGTON, Mo. - Five members of a family, including three lay ministers, are charged with sex crimes against children.
The five men arrested Tuesday are charged with several felonies, including forcible sodomy, rape with a child less than 12 years old and use of a child in a sexual performance. Allegations include bestiality and forcing an 11-year-old to have an abortion.
Authorities say one of the victims came forward with the allegations in mid-August. The 26- year-old woman is related to the suspects.
A spokeswoman for the Independence-based Community of Christ says three of the suspects are lay ministers but are not in positions of leadership or involved with youth.
Authorities were searching a rural property on Wednesday for one or more bodies as well as glass jars with notes written by children who allegedly were abused by their relatives. The crimes allegedly occurred from 1988 through 1995, according to court records.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said crews were scouring several acres of land outside Bates City in connection with the arrest of the men.
Lafayette County Sheriff Kerrick Alumbaugh said authorities believe there may be a body or bodies buried on the land. He asked for the public’s help in the investigation, saying that "there may be other victims out there."
Arrested were Burrell Edward Mohler Sr., 77, of Independence, and his sons, Burrell Edward Mohler Jr., 53, also of Independence; Jared Leroy Mohler, 48, of Columbia; Roland Neil Mohler, 47, of Bates City; and David A. Mohler, 52, of Lamoni, Iowa.
All five were being held in the Lafayette County jail on cash bonds ranging from $30,000 to $75,000. It was not immediately clear if they had attorneys.
Daughter of one man made allegation
Cpl. Bill Lowe of the highway patrol said one of the alleged victims, a daughter of one of the accused, came forward to investigators in mid-August with the allegations and that her siblings have been cooperating in the probe.
Lowe said the woman told investigators that she and the other alleged victims, three girls and a boy, buried glass jars around the property, filled with messages "about what was happening to them" when they were younger.
"Right now what our main focus is the glass jars and trying to locate them," Lowe said. "Those jars have that information."
He said crews were using dogs to assist in the search on the property that had been owned by the Mohler family outside Bates City, which is about 30 miles east of Kansas City, Mo.
Five victims have been located, but the number "could possibly expand," Lowe said. He said all were under the age of 12 at the time of the alleged abuse.
The Sheriff's Department, the Rural Missouri Major Case Squad and the Highway Patrol were investigating, with the help of the Western Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force.
Columbia police seized a computer and discs from Jared Mohler's home on Tuesday, police spokeswoman Jessie Haden said.
One arrest at university
One of the suspects, David Mohler, has worked for Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, for 27 years and was arrested on its Independence campus.
"Police came in and put handcuffs on him and led him away," university President John Sellars said. "It was all very quiet and subdued."
He said David Mohler periodically traveled to Independence to work on Graceland's phone systems there. Sellars described David Mohler as "a very nice person who got along well with his colleagues."
"We were stunned," Sellars said. "At this point these are allegations, and of course we need to hear more because I don't know very much at this point."
Sellars said he spoke to David Mohler's wife, Michelle Mohler, on Tuesday and that she also was "shocked and stunned."
He said the couple has grown children, but he did not know their ages or where they lived.
Deborah Burris, who has lived across the street from Burrell Mohler Sr. for several years, described the suspect as a friendly, helpful neighbor.
"We didn't even know he had sons. We didn't know anyone but Burrell himself," Burris said.
She said she thought Mohler lived with his wife and a daughter, but she had never seen them. He was occasionally seen walking around the neighborhood but had appeared frail lately, Burris said.
She said Mohler's house has an apartment on the north side, and there had been "quite a bit of activity there at different times."

As for what the military has done that is "nobel" since WWII... Kosovo comes to mind, as does the greater Bosnia peacekeeping efforts... Our efforts in Somalia were noble, even if unfulfilled. Afghanistan could have been a noble mission (and might still be, I suppose) were it not given the short-shrift by a president hell-bent on correcting the "wrongs" of his father. I won't bother mentioning the basic protections we enjoy because we have a strong military - - And while we might agree that much of the military adventurism we have seen in our lifetimes has been driven by greed, stupidity and what my man Ike called the "Military Industrial Complex", to discard the nobility of men who serve strikes me ignorant in the extreme.
With a military budget in excess of every foreign government in the world combined, and a worldwide network of at least 700 military bases, it stretches credulity to suggest that any country presents a military threat to us beyond the nuisance level. No, I think it's pretty obvious that the American armed services are not dispatched across the globe to protect some rhetorical "freedom" or "liberty," but rather to enforce our own hegemony and protect the interests of a wealthy few.

1940's Secret "Corporate" Tactic By Which Government Took All!

Many people have asked for a simple explanation as to the intent behind the CAFR and what happened over the decades?
Well, in a nut shell here is the foundation block that allowed government to take it all over by investment.
It started in the mid 40's and grew into what we have in government now seventy years latter come 2009.
Government started out as a "pay as you go" structure. By transforming into a corporate liability company over the decades, this gave them the ability to use "advance projections" to strip annual operating funds and create advance forward liability accounts whereby in doing so they were able to by stealth build numerous "wealth bases" of equity in many designated fund balances separate from the budget reports that were exclusively presented for public viewing.
When looking at the "whole picture" through the CAFR and sub investment fund reports noted per gross income, only 1/3rd is tax income whereas when you look at a budget report for the year it gives the impression per gross income that nearly 100% is tax income. Very deceptive when only one side of the coin is presented.
Budget reports are presented giving the false impression that it "is" the true financial picture and it is far from it. What is shown is primarily tax income for a "selective grouping" of accounts where tax income is collected and expended.
The takeover by government was primarily orchestrated by attorneys, both private and acting from within the Judiciary on the city, county, and state level. Many private associations were created since the 40's to push government along into becoming an administrative clearing house for revenue collection and control with many of these private associations calling the shots and firmly entrenched in the ever expanding cash flow from the trough. Laws were "created" as each and every push was moved forward to consolidate and expand the takeover by government as the public was masterfully entertained with distraction, misdirection, and misinformation due to the money involved.
Where has all this brought us today? I strongly recommend that all look at their local "County" CAFR. I have noticed a disturbing trend being forcefully implemented by the attorney complex in control today. (65% of Governors, Senators, and Congressmen are now attorneys) The place to look in your County CAFR is the Statistical Section at the end of the report. Currently most counties will give a ten year or a six year showing of the growth.
Many County CAFRs that I have looked at from the eastern side of the country show that over the last six to ten years:
1. There was a 100% increase in property taxes collected.
2. There was a 100% to 135% increase in the money pouring into the judiciary.
3. There was a 100% to 115% increase in the money pouring in to the prisons run by the county.
One thing I found particularly interesting was that even though their was over a 100% increase in cash flowing into the prisons, the prison average daily population had decreased in many a cases. Also I took note that the personnel working for the prisons was the largest employee base working for the county.
Now there were modest increases in social services programs for the youth, adults, and elderly, but nothing in comparison to the take being facilitated by the attorney complex for Judiciary and Prisons. It appears the trend is gearing up to "process" more people through the courts and prisons based on the money being applied.
Has the increase in processing the people started yet? By the numbers as of 2007 it appears not yet. I have a feeling though by 2010, they will be in full swing and who knows, the reader of this post may just be the lucky recipient of this expanding government service..

CANADYS — Their prophet speaks.
"I am the sign! Can I say that? I have faith enough to believe it."
Brother Stair is the Last Day Prophet of God.
Brother Stair is a sinner.
"I'll tell you what happened! I committed adultery with two women here! And I went to the people and apologized."
That was nearly six years ago. About 40 members of this reclusive Christian commune just north of Walterboro lost faith in their prophet and left. Accusations were flung about. Charges were filed. The authorities swooped in. Ralph G. Stair, then 68, was arrested and jailed for 77 days, eventually pleading guilty to two reduced charges of assault and battery.
His loyal followers at Overcomer Ministry farm and his radio listeners around the world were bereft.
But some continued to walk with Stair, and in the years since 2002, the community has tried to regain its footing.
Today, about 70, including nine children, live in this secluded place, growing their own food, making their own clothes and worshipping together on Saturdays in the Tabernacle. Residents include people of all ages, black and white. Self-sufficient, they survive by faith and hard work, even under the glare of scrutiny.
Their self-imposed exile, odd ways and controversial leader who preaches that the end of the world is upon us have fueled the flame of public concern and prompted numerous investigations by law enforcement officials at taxpayers' expense.
Who, exactly, are these reclusive end-of-times Christian farmers?
The commune, tucked in this corner of rural South Carolina just beneath Interstate 95 in Colleton County, is austere, featuring few amenities. Mobile homes and handmade houses provide nominal shelter from the elements. Rows of clotheslines extend from the laundry room. A refectory offers space for communal meals.
In an adjacent kitchen — well-equipped with a refrigerator, cupboards, food counters, a large cast-iron oven and stove top pieced together by the residents, mixing tools and other accoutrements — several women prepare the large daily meal.
The Overcomer community is both a place of its time and a place that functions oddly outside of time.
"This is the LAST generation!" Stair has exclaimed, his words posted on the Overcomer Web site. "THIS is the generation that God is going to POUR out His Wrath upon. I'm telling you that Christ IS coming! ... We haven't got any time Left."
And so the 20-year-old community is rooted in the present, ever on the lookout for the Messiah, ready for the imminent ecstasy of salvation.
Yet this is a farm like so many others that have been organized throughout history. It is an assembly of people who, for various reasons, have mostly removed themselves from the world, even if the world has a tendency to burst in on them unannounced and uninvited, resident Joseph Cline explains.
"When you have a great light, you draw a lot of bugs," Cline says. The great light is Brother Stair and his message of doom.
The message is everything
Aside from Jesus Christ and the promise of the Second Coming, the radio operation at Overcomer farm is everything. The agrarian life this community has embraced serves to support the broadcasts. Brother Stair spends hours at a time, whenever the spirit moves him, riffing on apocalyptic themes, the dissolution of the world's great political powers and the miracle promised by Christ's return.
Residents take a vow of poverty, giving their material wealth to the commune. A dress code requires modest attire, just as the Bible instructs. Men wear long pants and shirts with collars; women wear long skirts that cover their legs.
The priorities are the work and the Word.
"We don't put too much stock in worldly things," Cline says. "So we don't put too much money in them."
Cline, a former rock-'n'-roll musician, may be the only resident here with air conditioning, perhaps because his home is nearest to the gate and Cline tends to serve as the community receptionist. Another resident jokingly refers to Cline's modest home as Overcomer's Taj Mahal.
The day begins before sunrise. The farming is done during early morning hours. The planting, irrigation, harvesting or upkeep are usually finished by 9 or 10 a.m.
The crops are plentiful and include okra, peppers, cucumbers, garlic, onions, eggplant, spinach, carrots, pumpkin, broccoli, chard, collard greens, tomatoes, peanuts, watermelon, cane sugar, bananas, blueberries, grapes and various citrus. The excess is sold at a shed by Augusta Highway.
In the midst of the blueberry patch, a pole rises toward the heavens. A speaker is mounted at the top, and Brother Stair's aging tenor voice rings out. The speaker serves two functions, Cline says. It allows men and women in the fields to listen to the message, and it enables them to monitor the radio signal. Should the speaker go silent, it means the words of the prophet die at his microphone.
Stair spends hours at a time in the studio. Even his preaching in the tabernacle is sent out to the world beyond. The church and the radio studio are solar-powered. Just beyond a hand-dug, rainwater-filled ditch euphemistically called the "Long Pond" lies the photovoltaic panels — eight of them, each with six segments capturing sunlight and storing the energy in an impressive battery array housed in a nearby structure.
Harnessing the sun in this way ensures that pumps will always run to irrigate the crops and that Stair's voice will never be silenced in the event of a standard power failure.
In the event of such a failure, Cline's computer might shut down, the lights would go dark, the laundry machines would stop working, but through it all, the prophet would keep preaching.
Mark Hodgson, 25, and Dave Mull, 46, are the technicians who keep the broadcast going.
In a small equipment-filled building near the Long Pond, Hodgson, who has lived here for more than six years, says the broadcast is delivered to Pittsburgh by a satellite uplink. From there, it's transmitted to 25 stations throughout the United States and to Israel. Shortwave radio enables listeners in Germany, Slovakia and the Czech Republic to hear Brother Stair.
A decade ago, Brother Stair could be heard on 120 stations, Hodgson says. Overcomer Ministries has collected letters of support from people in 192 countries, he says, and many of them include financial contributions. The commune receives thousands of letters a year.
In a good month, its collections can reach $100,000, money used to pay for annual expenditures of about $1 million, according to Stair. In recent years, the farm has failed to break even, spending more to sustain the operation than it takes in from loyal listeners.
Mull says he's been a follower of Brother Stair since 1996. The commune has been his home for 3 1/2 years.
"I'm a believer in what he preaches," Mull says. "The world is in such bad shape right now."
In the quiet of a recent humid morning, Christopher Landry, the resident horticulturist and self-proclaimed Overcomer "fanatic," describes his journey from Texas A&M University, from which he graduated with a degree in economics, to the Christian farm in Colleton County.
Landry worked on a ranch while he was still in Texas, learning about plants and greenhouse operations. Then he worked at a publishing house in Dallas that required his presence on Saturday, the traditional Sabbath day, a day of rest he preferred to observe but couldn't.
In 1983, he was saved. It wasn't a particularly dramatic event, Landry says, more like a conviction affirmed.
"No one had to beat me over the head to believe the Bible. I took it literally and easily, but didn't know how to live by it."
One day, an acquaintance who was a Seventh-day Adventist asked Landry if she could find a job at the publishing company, and he warned her about the requirement to work on the Sabbath.
"God said (to me), 'Did you hear your own words?' That day I tendered my resignation."
Landry had heard Brother Stair on shortwave radio in Medina, Texas, a tiny crossroads town of a few hundred people.
"Everything he preached I already believed," he says. "I saw an opportunity to practice my faith in an environment that's not antagonistic to it. ... I believe Western civilization is going down the tubes. I'm a risk-averse person; I like to get out of the way when the fist is coming."
The troubles
Many outsiders don't think well of the Overcomer farm, authorities say. They think the people who live there are a bunch of religious zealots. They think members of the community are part of a cult whose leader has brainwashed his followers. They think Brother Stair is a white supremacist, a pervert, an extortionist. They think he runs a slave-labor camp.
The authorities — the State Law Enforcement Division, Colleton County Sheriff's Office and county coroner — have raided the farm several times, sometimes in the middle of the night, Stair and other residents say.
Sometimes the visits are prompted by disgruntled former residents who claim they were abused or exploited, Stair says. But no one is a captive here; anyone unhappy with the lifestyle can leave. And this has happened, Stair says. He even has returned some money to those who decide, sometimes after years on the farm, to abandon the prophet and his message.
He doesn't want trouble.
But in August 2001, Brother Stair made "an involuntary and partial disclosure regarding sexual battery against several young adult women who were 'Stair believers,' " according to a SLED case file. Stair says he apologized to the community for two adulterous affairs.
SLED's criminal case against Stair lists several accusations, including criminal sexual conduct, breach of trust and unlawful burial. The case file reveals that former members of the community accused Stair of intimidation and financial wrongdoing.
Last July, after he pleaded guilty to two reduced charges of simple assault and battery, the case was closed, according to SLED. He was sentenced to time served. Now, a civil case is pending.
Stair and his supporters say many of the allegations have come from people who found the going too tough at the farm and saw an opportunity to take advantage of someone easy to demonize.
The first of the troubles came shortly after Stair established Overcomer Ministry in the late 1980s. A stillbirth prompted an investigation then, too, though no charges were filed. The baby, three weeks overdue and 11 pounds, failed to get enough oxygen during a prolonged birth and suffocated, according to news reports.
No doctor was involved in the birth. The residents of the farm say they distrust and shun doctors. They attribute illness and death to God's will.
In December 1993, another child died several weeks after its birth, but the death was not reported to authorities, according to the SLED investigation. A search warrant was secured for the purpose of locating the grave and exhuming the body for an autopsy.
Then, a little more than a year ago, another stillbirth. On the gnat-ridden path between the fellowship hall and laundry room, Brother Stair points to the house where it happened.
The father was a trained medic. But the baby's grandmother was unhappy, according to Stair and Cline. She called the authorities and tried to get her daughter to seek medical attention.
"(Sheriff's deputies) would come out in the middle of the night demanding to see the mother and verify whether she was still alive, causing no small amount of stress," Cline wrote in an e-mail.
Eventually, the mother went to the hospital for a C-section, but it was too late, Cline wrote.
The county coroner automatically orders an autopsy of anyone who dies at Overcomer farm.
Daily bread
In the kitchen, a group of women prepare for the day's big 3 p.m. meal. Cline's wife, Cyndie, is making the bean cakes and eggplant-tomato salad. A row of fresh, whole-grain bread sits on a ledge.
The community, which raises a few goats and cattle, makes its own cheese, mayonnaise, butter, cottage cheese and sour cream.
Breakfast is served at 7:30 a.m. after work in the fields is well under way. School starts after breakfast, and the community-taught children get a break at noon and finish before dinner. Leftovers from the big meal are made available after the evening prayer for those still hungry.
While the men mostly perform the hard labor and the women mostly do domestic chores, the community is not averse to employing people according to their particular skills, Landry says.
"We promote the biblical roles of men and women," he says.
Rebecca Hodgson, 22, is Mark Hodgson's wife. She is helping 6-year-old Natasha Leer make sour cream. Natasha, sitting at a counter, turns the contents round and round in the bowl.
Rebecca Hodgson says she has been visiting Overcomer farm since 2002 and got married this past May. She says she's used to the Christian environment and rural lifestyle; it's how she grew up. When she was 15, she tried to kill herself, she says. Her father heard Stair on the radio and that gave him an idea: perhaps Rebecca would benefit from the ascetic life of the commune.
On the radio
The gnats swirl around Brother Stair's neck. He is tall and wiry, donning a thick white beard. His speech is high-pitched and direct. He is sure of his message but occasionally will rely on a follower to identify the specific passage of Scripture he alludes to.
"If somebody wants to know how to make it right with God, I'll show him," Stair says.
Repent. Change your ways.
Brother Stair is a marathon preacher. He can spend hours in the solar-powered broadcast studio without food or drink. He gets carried away; he loses track of time. His record is 11 hours at one sitting.
He is not interested in proselytizing, he says. It's not converts he seeks but, rather, faithful Christians who are not yet aware that the Apocalypse has begun to cast its shadow over the ends of the Earth, he says.
Brother Stair is adept at manipulating the technology. He adjusts the 16-track mixing board, logs on to the instant-messaging feature on the computer, opens his oversized Bible to the Book of Revelation and ensures the telephone answering system is functional. Multivitamins are stacked on a nearby table. A bottle of Fixodent sits to one side.
He is railing against corruption, society's dependency on the almighty dollar. He is predicting the imminent end of times, for once the world's two superpowers crumble, so shall man's reign on Earth. He is preaching about the glory that accompanies Christ's coming. The Soviet Union fell apart in 1989. Now the United States is compromised, its borders permeable, its influence diminished, its markets globalized.
And religion is susceptible to global markets, too, the nondenominational prophet says. Institutional religion is corrupt. It provokes Armageddon.
"That's why they hate us out there! We don't buy and sell. ... Love of money is the root of all evil, not fornication."
And that allusion to his own sins puts him on the defensive.
"I confessed my sin, never justified it," he says. "The Lord said to me, 'You're dealing with a generation of immorality, and you are not different than anyone else.' "
Then he turns to the computer and exchanges a quick greeting with a faraway listener, first asking for his identity. Some messages come from pranksters, or worse, he explains, so Brother Stair always dips a toe in the water before taking the plunge.
The reply comes. It is from a true follower, Brother Stair decides, then types "God bless you friend."
"There is nothing more confusing and more complex than religion," Brother Stair says. "The end is coming, and the only future you have is in Christ."
Members of this community firmly believe that future can be secured here, in the fields, under the hot sun, fending for themselves, putting their trust in the Lord and supporting their prophet as he sends out his message across the airwaves.
"This," Brother Stair says, "is the good life."

Members of this community do not believe that their salvation is in their farm or in Brother Stair, but it is only in Jesus Christ. It's outrages to me if you suggest otherwise. Brother Stair is a faithful and humble servant of God. Jesus is everything to us. We follow Brother Stair's faith in God, as the Bible says we should. The good life is being SAVED. That's the message of the Holy Bible, and what we believe. Saved from hell. A place many no longer believe in.
Overcomer Christian Community:
Living honest, loving our neighbors, we live having all things 'common' as the book of Acts states the disciples lived, devoted to God, Holy, free from sin. We are law abiding reasonable people.
The End of the Ages:
A lot of people agree that if the Bible is true, the end of God's plan for this world is about to climax. Isn't that okay if we believe that? According to Rush the book of Revelation shouldn't even be in the Bible. We don't agree. Is that alright? The last century has been like no other in the history of the world and you want me to think there's nothing special about our lifetime? Most can't see the forest for the trees.
This article is one of the most stick-to-the-facts articles I've read in regards to that Ministry. Far better than the tripe put out by Libby Roerig of the Press and Standard a few years ago. Poor Adam can't make anyone happy on either side of this issue though.
This could hardly be called spin. For those put on the defensive by this article, maybe you should ask yourself why. With statements like, "The great light is Brother Stair..." it makes one wonder. Is this a misquote or was the abundance of someone's heart exposed?
You want spin? Try this line near the top: "I'll tell you what happened! I committed adultery with two women here!" Well, that's sad and unfortunate but benign enough, right? You people in Walterboro know that's only a half-truth. The crimes committed are terrible enough without downplaying them too. Is this incompetence or deceit?
The man has not believed his own message and that's the faith you're going to follow? "Well, he repented." Which time? How many times since August 2001 have you all had to deal with certain issues? I know of two. Half-truths and cover-up are not signs of repentance.
When you folks in Walterboro "get real" and wake up from your self-induced slumber, then you can deal with Adam about his article.

I was[A PAID SPY & AGENT SABATOUR to SEED FALSE REPORTS TO DESTROY the Truth of that Overcommer Holy Man for 6.5 years. I lived on one of the communities for over 4 years. The people who live on these communities have no idea of how strong of a delusion they've ESCAPED from by COMING OUT of the TELEVISION CONTROLLERS!!!The only way to understand that is to come out of it. False prophecy after false prophecy should tell you something shouldn't it? And how about the lies to cover up the false prophecies?
God tells us not to be afraid of a prophet whos prophecies don't come to pass. This is what pried my eye open and started my search for what was really true. That was over 6 years ago now and I am soooo glad to be free from the tyranny of the Brother Stair delusion. Yes, I was one of the ones who escaped Brother Stair's control to find that Christ was nothing like I was being He was.
I hope more people down there and on the other communities have their eyes opened like I did so they can get free to do what God really wants them to do.
No Bail for 'Prophet of Baal'

At a hearing Friday morning, Colleton County Chief Magistrate Richard Wood denied bond for the self-proclaimed prophet Ralph Gordon Stair who leads a religious community in Canadys called the Overcomer Ministry.
Wood set a $50,000 bond for each of the two breach of trust charges, but for the two second-degree criminal sexual conduct charges, he told the 69 - year - old minister a circuit court judge would have to set bond.
"I won't do it," Wood said. At press time Monday, a second hearing had not been scheduled.
When offered a court -appointed attorney, one of Stair's followers Chip Landry spoke for the minister. "We'll probably hire one if we can go that route," Landry said. Stair's wife Teresa and another follower were also present at the hearing.
South Carolina Law Enforcement investigator Travis Avant requested a "substantial surety bond," as his investigation was on going and it was "likely there will be more charges similar to those in the coming weeks." Stair has no prior criminal record, Avant said.
Avant began investigating this case about a month ago, he said. The two criminal sexual conduct charges were brought by two girls, who moved to the farm where they say Stair had sex with them over 70 times against their will.
The two breach of trust charges are brought on the behalf of Lawrence and Linda Skenandore, former followers of Stair who left the farm in November 2000 after being there only a few months. They say Stair offered to invest their retirement savings, which included the sums of $3,079.07 and $26,556.40 for them. But after the Skenandores left, the money disappeared.
Now living in North Carolina, the Skenandores began listening to Stair's radio ministry in May 1994. Immediately, Linda Skenandore began sending him as much money as she could afford, she said.
In March 2000, the family of four made their first visit to the farm.
"When we got ready to leave, they told us the girls were staying," Linda Skenandore said. "He (Stair) said as far as we were concerned, this was their new home. We didn't know when we would see our girls again."
Obeying the prophet, the couple left their then 19 and 20-year-old daughters and went back to North Carolina.
While they were there, Regina Skenandore Belford, who is the younger of the two girls and currently lives in Arkansas, says Stair made advancements on her. On several occasions, he asked for a hug, but he received more than an embrace.
"He ran his hand all the way down my back to my backside, my butt," she said. "I thought at first it was an accident, maybe he didn't mean to do it.
"I was so naīve to what he was doing that I didn't realize he wanted more than a hug."
Linda Skenandore says she and her husband drove from North Carolina nearly every weekend to see their daughters and to go to church services. With each visit, something seemed to be more and more out of the usual.
"I was beginning to feel an evil presence in that place," she said. "You just sensed a wickedness. You just know it was horrible and evil."
Despite her concerns, the couple joined their daughters in August 2000. Though the thought of living in a religious community appealed to the Skenandores, the environment was less than heavenly.
It's not decent for anyone to live down there," she said. "It's not decent for the roaches and rats that live there.
"I've never seen reaches that big in my life. You could hear them crawling at night. But, it wasn't the roaches that scared me, it was the mice."
Shortly after arriving. Linda Skenandore says Stair approached them about his investing the couple's retirement for them.
Ralph told my husband that he knew of two places that it could be rolled over," she said. Stair gave them an account number, and they called the bank to have the funds electronically transferred.
"When we got ready to leave, he gave us a portion of that money back," she said. "It was not the IRA. The money he gave us was to get back on our feet."
Though Belford left shortly after her parents did and married her husband in September 2001, her sister Angela is still living in the community.
Though they were extremely close growing up, Belford says Stair drove them apart.
"Me and her were just best friends growing up," she said. In light of the charges brought against Stair, both Linda Skenandore and Belford wonder if they will ever be able to speak to her again.

Prophet Stair Still Behind Bars

The leader of a local religious community will remain in jail for at least another month, as his bond was denied at a second hearing Wednesday morning.
Ralph Gordon Stair, 69, was arrested May 16 and charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the second degree and two counts of breach of trust. At a May 17 bond hearing, Colleton County Chief Magistrate Richard Wood set a $50,000 bond for each of the financial charges but denied it for the other two.
Stair, who is a self-proclaimed prophet, preaches over AM and short-wave radio to a worldwide audience of followers. Additionally, he has a nearly 100-person community known as the Overcomer Ministry in Canadys.
At Wednesday's hearing, 14th Judicial Circuit Judge Perry Buckner heard both the state's case against Stair and defendant's defense.
State Law Enforcement Division, SLED investigator Travis Avant told Buckner that he felt Stair was flight risk and a danger to the community. To support his flight risk argument, Avant asserted that the minister has "access to a tremendous amount of money," has followers with communities similar to his across the nation and throughout Europe and has traveled extensively in the past.
Because Avant's criminal investigation is in its preliminary stages and will likely result in more charges against the accused, he believes Stair could prevent possible victims from coming forward, as the preacher has a "powerful method of brainwashing."
Benny Hinn is just one more fake faith-healer who has made millions of dollars by deceiving ignorant church-goers. None of his alleged healings have been verified by a medical doctor. David Wegener produced an expose of Benny and found that Benny is in the religious biz for fame and fortune. Benny has made several false prophecies. He prophesied that God would judge homosexuals in America and kill them off by 1998. He prophesied that Fidel Castro would die in 1999. He also prophesied in the early years of 2000 decade that Jesus would appear on stage with him and other Pentecostal evangelists. He also teaches some of the most bizarre heresies ever spewed from the minds of the fallen angels. He thinks there are nine members of the Trinity and that Jesus went to Hades and fought with demons. He believes the typical heresies of the Pentecostals. I will list more of Benny's heresies in the coming months. Benny stated at least once on tape that he doesn't care about the streets of gold in Heaven and that he doesn't want his riches in Heaven. He said he wants them here in this life. He his guilty of the sin of the love of money (I Tim. 6.10) and the sin of pride. According to the Bible YAHWEH is opposed to him (James 4.6; I Peter 3.12).
Benny claims that he worked with Katherine Khulman and that she annointed him to carry on her work. He claims to have had divine visions and that angels have visited him.
Benny is a false prophet, a false teacher, a heretic, a con-artist, a spiritual snake-oil salesman and a spiritual terrorist who is deceiving thousands of unlearned church-goers. He needs to be rebuked, corrected, refuted (Tit. 1.9-13; 2.15) and ostracized from the Body of YAHSHUA as Paul commanded (I Cor. 5.9-13).
Avoid Benny Hinn and his ilk like the plague. They are minions of the devil who are doing his evil work. (2 Cor. 11.13-15). If you have your senses trained to discern between good and evil (Hebrews 5.14) warn every believer you know about Benny Hinn and other heretics. But for the record: While I have no military service, my father and grandfather both served and fought in various wars throughout the 20th century, and living in San Diego has given me the opportunity to become acquainted with many other servicemen and women. The most extensive conversations I've had on the subject have been with my father, and the wealth of data I've brought to the discussions has only led him to concede that he can't win an argument with me, but that he can't concede my points either, insofar as doing so would invalidate his entire life.
When I graduated high school, joining the military was inconceivable not because it was laughable, but because I had already joined The Committee Opposed To Militarism And The Draft and The War Resisters League. I think it's pretty tragic that you felt forced to join due to lack of economic opportunity and/or underfunded education. I'd like to believe you had other choices, but I readily concede the decision was yours and I'm not in a position to comment on that. Regardless, none of that has any bearing on whether or not U.S. Servicemen are tools of a corrupt foreign policy.
Forming an opinion about the role of the American military on the world stage is not "sitting in judgment," as if my "verdict" had ramifications beyond a simple disagreement between honest people. I am not a Judge, I don't live in a tower, ivory or otherwise, and it was not my intention to "insult" those who've served, which is why I mentioned that it saddens me to express this opinion. I only meant to point out that the seemingly unanimous orgy of self-congratulation that we heap upon our military each year might not be as well-deserved as it's portrayed. There is a dark undercurrent to the activities of the U.S. government, and holidays such as this are designed to distract us from it and intimidate those who would point it out.
Has the U.S. military done anything noble in the last 65 years? Of course, but those were humanitarian missions, not military operations, and they were usually opposed by the military's biggest boosters, those who resent putting troops under the command of the United Nations or in the service of anything other than American interests. Regardless, military means to a noble end are often doomed to failure. The mere existence of the U.S. military in foreign countries is often an opposition force's greatest recruitment tool. At the same time, it's very difficult to mistake the intentions of doctors and aid workers.

I know that world - of the many friends I had in high school, only two joined up - me and another guy. Neither of us did it because of some burning patriotism -- we needed jobs and our families didn't have the $$ to send us to college. We both are much older now, much "wiser" and are both proud of our service.

Your extremely abridged history of the observance is welcome but unnecessary. I don't know why you believe I'm ignorant of these facts, or how being aware of them might change my opinion. But, to settle any doubt: Woodrow Wilson, 28th President, first proclaimed Armistice Day in 1919, with the day becoming a legal holiday in 1938. At the time, it was "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace." But by 1954, at the height of the jingoism of the Cold War, the "cause of world peace" was subverted to that of simply honoring service in the armed forces. Were it not for the previous decade of tensions between East and West, Armistice Day might still be an annual moment of reflection on peace, instead of merely a day to honor the tools of American corporate imperialism.
I think the reason you believe honoring veterans should be a national imperative, even though the country was already 178 years old when Veterans Day as we know it was first observed, is because you've accepted that military service is one of the highest forms of patriotism, which is really quite sad. As one of the richest, most powerful countries in history, we have the opportunity to bring far more benefit than harm to the rest of the world, an opportunity we're squandering out of fear. Why not a national holiday for Doctors Without Borders, UNICEF or Amnesty International?
Finding a vet at work and shaking his hand might be a good idea if I worked with anyone over the age of 80. But I have no interest in thanking anyone for helping to advance our country's wrong-headed, self-serving and often disastrous foreign policies over the past 65 years. With a military budget in excess of every foreign government in the world combined, and a worldwide network of at least 700 military bases, it stretches credulity to suggest that any country presents a military threat to us beyond the nuisance level. No, I think it's pretty obvious that the American armed services are not dispatched across the globe to protect some rhetorical "freedom" or "liberty," but rather to enforce our own hegemony and protect the interests of a wealthy few.
Smedley Butler, in 1940 the most decorated Marine in U.S. history, put the situation in stark relief in 1935: "I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents."
There are serious structural issues undermining the U.S. labour market as companies continue to adjust their order books, production schedules and staffing requirements to a semi-permanently impaired credit backdrop. The bottom line is that the level of credit per unit of GDP is going to be much, much lower in the future than has been the case in the last two decades. While we may be getting close to a bottom in terms of employment, the jobless rate is very likely going to be climbing much further in the future due to the secular dynamics within the labour market that need to be discussed:
• For the first time in at least six decades, private sector employment is negative on a 10-year basis (first turned negative in August). Hence, the changes are not merely cyclical or short-term in nature. Many of the jobs created between the 2001 and 2008 recessions were related either directly or indirectly to the parabolic extension of credit.
"Our goal in the region is clear: two states living side by side in peace and security; a Jewish state of Israel, with which America retains unbreakable bonds, and with true security for all Israelis; and a viable, independent Palestinian state with contiguous territory that ends the occupation that began in 1967, that ends the daily humiliations of Palestinians under occupation, and that realizes the full and remarkable potential of the Palestinian people."
Burns added that while the Obama Administration appreciates Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's partial settlement freeze, it does not go nearly far enough. Burns was certainly aware that to the Palestinians, his words would be interpreted to mean that Israel must expel all 250,000 Jews living in Judea and Samaria, as well as the tens of thousands of Jews who live on the eastern side of Jerusalem.
Burns' remarks came just a day after Obama and Netanyahu met at the White House in what has now been revealed to be a less than friendly encounter.
Israel was fully expecting a fresh wave of American pressure following Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas' threat to quit if he doesn't get what he wants.
Many Americans might be tempted to casually conclude that the purpose of Pelosi's new payroll tax is to force employers to buy health insurance for their workers and that the parties hurt most by the tax would be the employers who pay it.
This is wrong on both counts. The Pelosi tax will not force employers to buy insurance for their workers, it will give them an incentive not buy insurance. The parties most hurt by the Pelosi tax will not be the employers who pay it but the workers dumped into the government-run health care system Pelosi's plan creates.
This will happen when employers discover that paying Pelosi's tax is cheaper than buying health insurance. The Pelosi payroll tax will be a whip wielded by the state to drive Americans into a socialized health care system from which there will be no escape.
In 2016, when the Pelosi plan would be in full force, the average employer-provided health insurance plan will cost $11,000 for a family and $6,000 for an individual, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Barton based his analysis on a family plan that cost only $10,000.
"The employee pays $3,500 and the employer pays $6,500," said Barton. "Since there's an 8 percent payroll tax on the (employer's) average (wage) of $40,000, that would be about $3,200. Most employers, when this plan is implemented, can pay the 8 percent tax, which is $3,200, or the $6,500 premium that they pay for their employees.
"They're going to stop providing health care ... and they're just going to put them in the public option," said Barton. "The employee is going to take that $3,500 that he or she was paying for their premium for a $10,000 plan and they're going to find out that when they go into the health care exchange, their $3,500 doesn't buy a $10,000 policy. It buys a $3,500 policy. It's a bad deal."
The deal looks even worse when you consider some of its technicalities -- which are also designed to drive Americans into government-run health care.
The bill that passed the House sets up a national "health insurance exchange" run by the government. Families earning up to 400 percent of the poverty level ($88,200 for a family of four) will qualify for a federal insurance subsidy that attenuates as family income rises. But families will not get this subsidy if their employer provides them with insurance, or if they buy their insurance anywhere but in the government exchange. One of the plans in the exchange will be the "public option" run by the government itself.
The Pelosi payroll tax will be phased in for companies with annual payrolls between $500,000 and $750,000. Employers with payrolls less than $500,000 will not pay it at all. Employers with payrolls between $500,000 and $585,000 will pay 2 percent of payroll if they don't provide health insurance. Employers with payrolls between $585,000 and $670,000 will pay 4 percent. Employers with payrolls between $670,000 and $750,000 will pay 6 percent. And employers with payrolls over $750,000 will pay the full 8 percent.
An employer who has 10 employees and an annual payroll of $499,000 (or an average of $49,900 per worker) will not pay a penny of Pelosi tax if he cancels his private health insurance program and dumps his workers into the government health care system. He will also have an incentive not to give his workers a raise or to risk his own money trying to grow his business.
But assume he does give each worker a $1,000 raise at the end of the year, bringing his payroll to $509,000. In that case, he faces a choice: Either pay 65 percent of the $11,000 annual insurance premium for every one of his workers who has a family and 72.5 percent of the $6,000 premium for every worker who does not have a family -- or pay the 2 percent Pelosi tax.
The Pelosi tax would only charge him a flat fee of $10,180 (2 percent of his $509,000 payroll) to offload all his workers into the government system.
Because the government-run public option would be able to undersell the government-approved private plans in the government-run insurance exchange, the government-run option would soon be the only option.
Government would control our health care from womb to tomb, a time span likely to be shortened by government care.
Whole peoples, like individuals, can become irrational on occasion -- sometimes for a brief moment, sometimes for years, sometimes for decades. Ambition, hatred, fear can get the better of them, and gross lies told by their leaders can deceive their otherwise rational minds. It has happened, it happens, it will continue to happen.
One of the most outrageous and horrific examples of an entire country falling into national madness probably was Hitler's Germany from 1933-45. The resulting world war was disastrous, leading to more than 40,000,000 deaths.
A good share of what we know about how this happened in Germany usually comes to us many years later from post-facto books, looking backward to the horror. There are very few examples of accounts written from the inside at the very time the events were unfolding.
One such book is "Defying Hitler," by the noted German journalist/author Sebastian Haffner. The manuscript was found, stuffed away in a drawer, by Haffner's son in 1999 after his father's death at age 91. Published in 2000, the book became an immediate best-seller in Germany and was published last year in English, translated by the son, Oliver Pretzel. (His father's original name was Raimund Pretzel; as Sebastian Haffner, he went on to a highly successful career, writing in England during the war and then later back in Germany. He authored "From Bismarck to Hitler" and "The Meaning of Hitler," among many other works.)
"Defying Hitler" is a brilliantly written social document, begun (and ended abruptly) in 1939; even though it fills in the reader on German history from the First World War on, its major focus is on the year 1933, when, as Hitler assumed power, Haffner was a 25-year-old law student, in-training to join the German courts as a junior administrator.
You find yourself reading this book in amazement; there is so much historical perspective, so much sweep of what was going on and predictions of what later was to happen, so many insights into what led so many ordinary Germans to join with or acquiesce to the Nazi program -- how could anyone so young be so prescient in the midst of the brutal sordidness that was Nazism? (Indeed, some critics claimed that Haffner must have rewritten the book decades later; every page of the original manuscript was sent to laboratories, which authenticated that it indeed had been composed in 1939.)
THE INDIVIDUAL IN SOCIETY
What distinguishes "Defying Hitler," in addition to its superb writing, is that Haffner focuses on "little people" like himself, rather than on the machinations of leaders. He wants to explore how ordinary Germans, especially non-Nazi and anti-Nazi Germans, permitted themselves to be swallowed whole into the Hitlerian maw.
Haffner makes occasional broad pronouncements about German character traits ("As Bismarck once remarked in a famous speech, moral courage is, in any case, a rare virtue in Germany, but it deserts a German completely the moment he puts on a uniform"), but he devotes a good deal of his attention to the question of personal responsibility. If you read ordinary history books, he says, "you get the impression that no more than a few dozen people are involved, who happen to be 'at the helm of the ship of state' and whose deeds and decisions form what is called history.
"According to this view, the history of the present decade [the 1930s] is a kind of chess game among Hitler, Mussolini, Chiang Kai-Shek, Roosevelt, Chamberlain, Daladier, and a number of other men whose names are on everybody's lips. We anonymous others seem at best to be the objects of history, pawns in the chess game, who may be pushed forward or left standing, sacrificed or captured, but whose lives, for what they are worth, take place in a totally different world, unrelated to what is happening on the chessboard.
"... It may seem a paradox, but it is nonetheless the simple truth, to say that on the contrary, the decisive historical events take place among us, the anonymous masses. The most powerful dictators, ministers, and generals are powerless against the simultaneous mass decisions taken individually and almost unconsciously by the population at large... Decisions that influence the course of history arise out of the individual experiences of thousands or millions of individuals."
THE RIDDLE OF HITLER'S RISE
Haffner tries to solve the riddle of the easy acceptance of fascism in Hitler's Third Reich. In March of 1933, a majority of German citizens did not vote for Hitler. "What happened to that majority? Did they die? Did they disappear from the face of the earth? Did they become Nazis at this late stage? How was it possible that there was not the slightest visible reaction from them" as Hitler, installed by the authorities as Chancellor, began slowly and then more quickly consolidating power and moving Germany from a democratic state to a totalitarian one?
All along the way, Hitler would propose or actually promulgate regulations that sliced away at German citizens' freedoms -- usually aimed at small, vulnerable sectors of society (labor unionists, communists, Jews, mental defectives, et al.) -- and few said or did anything to indicate serious displeasure. In the early days, on those rare occasions when there was concerted negative reaction, Hitler would back off a bit. And so the Nazis grew bolder and more voracious as they continued slicing away at civil society. Many Germans (including some of Hitler's original corporate backers) were convinced Nazism would collapse as it became more and more extreme; others chose denial. It was easier to look the other way.
Haffner saw what was starting to happen, but retreated into his law studies. Even while the Brownshirts were beating and killing people in the streets, the courts with which he worked remained a solid bulwark in defense of traditional democratic principles. And then one day, the Nazis simply marched into the Berlin court buildings and took over Germany's judicial system. Haffner was shaken to the core, but continued studying for his final exams.
Shortly thereafter, he and his fellow students were dispatched to a kind of boot camp for ideological and military training. Haffner, a Christian anti-Nazi, found himself, to his astonishment and horror, wearing jackboots, a swastika and learning how to kill.
In an inner monologue, Haffner says: "There are some things I must never do: never say anything that I would be ashamed of later. Shooting at targets is all right. But not at people. I must not commit myself, or sell my soul... Oh dear! It dawned on me that I had already relinquished and lost everything. I wore a uniform with a swastika armband. I stood to attention and cleaned my rifle... .But that did not count: it was not me that did it; it was a game and I was acting a part.
"Only what if, dear God, there was some court that did not recognize this defense, but simply wrote down everything as it happened; that did not look into my heart, but simply noted the swastika armband? Before that court I was in a wretched position. Dear God, where had I gone wrong? What should I say to the judge who asked, 'You wear a swastika armband and say that you do not want to. Then why do you wear it?'"
Nazi propaganda, policies and terror had broken down traditional support-networks. You couldn't be sure whom to trust. Everyone could be on the government payroll, or could turn into informants to save their skins. And so arms went out in Nazi salutes, militarist songs were sung at rallies and on the streets, "each one of us the Gestapo of the others." In fear, individualism was crushed, leaving most citizens to relate only to The Leader, or to their military units, the comradeship offered by fascism.
MILLIONS OF MARKS FOR A LOAF OF BREAD
Then there was the economic factor, the terror associated with having no money with which to live. One reads Haffner's description of the hyper-inflation crisis, but it's difficult to accept or understand: "No other nation has experienced anything comparable to the events of 1923 in Germany. All nations went through the Great War, and most of them have also experienced revolutions, social crises, strikes, redistributions of wealth, and currency devaluation. None but Germany has undergone the fantastic, grotesque extreme of all of these together; none has experienced the gigantic, carnival dance of death, the unending, bloody Saturnalia, in which not only money but all standards lost their value.
"... Anyone who had savings in a bank or bonds saw their value disappear overnight. Soon it did not matter whether it was a penny put away for a rainy day or a vast fortune. Everything was obliterated... A pound of potatoes which yesterday had cost fifty thousand marks now cost a hundred thousand. The salary of sixty-five thousand marks brought home the previous Friday was no longer sufficient to buy a packet of cigarettes on Tuesday... In August, the dollar reached a million [marks]... .In September, a million marks no longer had any practical value... At the end of October, it was a billion... The atmosphere became revolutionary once again."
When citizens face uncertainty on this scale -- and the fear and dislocation that attend all such social traumas -- a man on a white horse promising to restore order has great appeal, even to some staunch democrats.
There were other ingredients that went into the bubbling fascist vat: the humiliating terms of the Versailles Treaty that were placed on defeated Germany after World War I; the unceasing propaganda barrage in the mass media, helping citizens to agree with the government; the martial mentality that pervaded society. ("From 1914 to 1918 a generation of German schoolboys daily experienced war as a great, thrilling, enthralling game between nations, which provided far more excitement and emotional satisfaction than anything peace could offer; and that is where [Nazism] draws its allure from: its simplicity, its appeal to the imagination, and its zest for action; but also its intolerance and its cruelty toward internal opponents... Ultimately, that is also the source of Nazism's belligerent attitude toward neighboring states. Other countries are not regarded as neighbors, but must be opponents, whether they like it or not."
And then there is the inexplicable mystique that surrounds such men as Hitler, that mesmerizes and lures millions into their web. "If my experience of Germany has taught me anything, it is this: Rathenau [who led a progressive government in 1921-22, and was then assassinated by anti-Semitic thugs] and Hitler are the two men who excited the imagination of the German masses to the utmost; the one by his ineffable culture, the other by his ineffable vileness. Both, and this is decisive, came from inaccessible regions, from sort of 'beyond.' the one from a sphere of sublime spirituality where the cultures of three millennia and two continents hold a symposium; the other from a jungle far below the depths plumbed by the basest penny dreadfuls, from an underworld where demons rise from a brewed-up stench of petty-bourgeois back rooms, doss-houses, barrack latrines, and the hangman's yard. From their respective 'beyonds,' they both drew a spellbinding power, quite irrespective of their politics."
When Hitler's in-your-face brand of "beyond" power -- with its meanness and arrogance and menace, throwing opponents in jail, beating them, even killing them -- met the traditional democratic culture, those on the other end often had no tools at their disposal to combat the new hardball politics: "It was then that the real mystery of the Hitler phenomenon began to show itself: the strange befuddlement and numbness of his opponents, who could not cope with his behavior and found themselves transfixed by the gaze of the basilisk, unable to see that it was hell personified that challenged them."
THE BIG LIE TECHNIQUE
And how did Haffner deal for so long with this menacing force in front of him? "What saved me was... my nose. I have a fairly well developed figurative sense of smell, or to put it differently, a sense of the worth (or worthlessness!) of human, moral, political views and attitudes. Most Germans unfortunately lack this sense almost completely. The cleverest of them are capable of discussing themselves stupid with their abstractions and deductions, when just using their noses would tell them that something stinks."
Given their built-in weakness and their willingness to swallow the most outrageous Big Lies emanating from the propaganda ministry and the media, most Germans were fruit waiting to be plucked by the Nazi harvesters. "They still fall for anything. After all that, I do not see that one can blame the majority of Germans who, in 1933, believed that the Reichstag fire was the work of the Communists. [The Parliament burned down and a convenient Communist arsonist was fingered, which the Nazis used as the excuse to unleash police-state tactics against all opponents.] What one can blame them for, and what shows their terrible collective weakness of character clearly for the first time during the Nazi period, is that this settled the matter. With sheepish submissiveness the German people accepted that, as a result of the fire, each one of them lost what little personal freedom and dignity was guaranteed by the constitution; as though it followed as a necessary consequence."
In short, what should have been a strong political and moral opposition movement to Hitlerian policies, meekly acceded to the destruction of their country's institutions of law and social harmony. The result in society was a clear leaning toward the dynamic, muscular policies advocated by the Nazis, and a seething "anger and disgust with the cowardly treachery of their own [opposition] leadership."
Of course, fear of police-state action always was operative. "Join the thugs to avoid being beaten up. Less clear was a kind of exhilaration, the intoxication of unity, the magnetism of the masses. Many also felt a need for revenge against those who had abandoned them. Then there was a peculiarly German line of thought: 'All the predictions of the opponents of the Nazis have not come true. They said the Nazis could not win. Now they have won. Therefore the opponents were wrong. So the Nazis must be right.' There was also (particularly among intellectuals) the belief that they could change the face of the Nazi Party by becoming a member, even now shift its direction."
All of this follows the normal range of psychology, Haffner says. "The only thing that is missing is what in animals is called 'breeding.' This is a solid inner kernel that cannot be shaken by external pressures and forces, something noble and steely, a reserve of pride, principle, and dignity to be drawn on in the hour of trial. It is missing in the Germans. As a nation they are soft, unreliable, and without backbone. That was shown in March 1933. At the moment of truth, when other nations rise spontaneously to the occasion, the Germans collectively and limply collapsed. They yielded and capitulated, and suffered a nervous breakdown. The result of this million-fold nervous breakdown is the unified nation, ready for anything, that is today the nightmare of the rest of the world."
Haffner laments that the crimes of the Hitler administration, given this collective nervous breakdown, have very little impact on the population, which seems to accept everything done in its name with a shrug of the shoulders. "It is one of the uncanny aspects of events in Germany that the deeds have no doers, the suffering has no martyrs. Everything takes place under a kind of anesthesia. Objectively dreadful deeds produce a thin, puny emotional response. Murders are committed like schoolboy pranks. Humiliation and moral decay are accepted like minor incidents. Even death under torture only produces the response 'Bad luck'."
THE SLIDE TOWARD FASCISM
And so it becomes easier to simply permit oneself to sink, ever so slowly into this collective illness, into accommodation with the ruling party, even though the police-state is constantly violating citizens' privacy. "We were pursued into the farthest corners of our private lives; in all areas of life there was rout, panic, and flight. No one could tell where it would end. At the same time we were called upon, not to surrender, but to renege. Just a little pact with the devil -- and you were no longer one of the captured quarry. Instead you were one of the victorious hunters."
Certainly, Haffner and others like him felt their own slide toward complicity with the Nazis, as their sense of self faded. "Things were quite deliberately arranged so that the individual had no room to maneuver. What one represented, what one's opinions were in 'private' and 'actually,' were of no concern and set aside, put on ice, as it were. On the other hand, in moments when one had the leisure to think of one's individuality... one had the feeling that what was actually happening, in which one participated mechanically, had no real existence or validity. It was only in these hours that one could attempt to call oneself morally to account and prepare a last position of defense for one's inner self."
Haffner was approaching decision time about his future if he stayed in the Third Reich. But it's clear which way he was leaning, as his analyses got darker and darker. "It is said that the Germans are subjugated. That is only half true. They are also something else, something worse, for which there is no word: they are 'comraded,' a dreadfully dangerous condition. They are under a spell. They live a drugged life in a dream world. They are terribly happy, but terribly demeaned; so self-satisified, but so boundlessly loathsome; so proud and yet so despicable and inhuman. They think they are scaling high mountains, when in reality they are crawling through a swamp. As long as the spell lasts, there is almost no antidote."
But this article is not just about this, it is about what one homosexual told the press. The Rev. Troy Perry, who founded the predominately “gay” Metropolitan Community Church in Los Angeles in 1968, was quoted as saying, “I’m not pleased, but I’m not bitter about it. I’m a Christian.” Here we have a sodomite claiming to be a “Christian”! This, dear ones, is BLASPHEMY! How can one be a Christian and practice homosexuality?—even more, start a whole Church that allows such abominations . . . a church where “gay” men and women, bisexuals and transgenders congregate, all in the name of “Christianity”? This un-Scriptural trend of being “gay” and being “Christian” is growing, not only in the homosexual communities, but in many other avenues as well.
“Is It Possible to be Saved Thru Christ Without
BELIEVING IN Christ?” This was a headline in a Christian newspaper recently. Someone else is finally addressing this crucial issue! We’ve been asking this for a long time! This popular doctrine (of the devil!) among evangelicals, “emergents” and “contemplatives” today is the (false) idea that a sinner can be saved thru Christ without actually believing in Him. Try that one out! Is that like quenching your thirst without taking a drink?
Dear Ol’ Billy Graham
DR. CATHY Burns, in her masterpiece book, Billy Graham and His Friends, has plenty to write about on this vital subject. If at all possible, buy her book (Sharing, 212 E. 7th St., #B, Mt. Carmel, PA 17851-2211). This book is over 788 pages long. Powerful! On page 121, she writes, “...Graham himself said of (Robert) Schuller: ‘There is no one in all the world I love in Christ more than I do Bob Schuller . . . He has done some of the greatest things for the Kingdom of God of any man in our generation.’” Graham wets on himself over Schuller, who is every bit a LOST HERETIC as Graham!!
Just recently (autumn 2008) Schuller senior made his son step down from pastoring his famous Glass Cathedral in California. What for? For preaching from the Bible!
To the Point
ON PAGES 18-19 of Dr. Burn’s book, she quotes both Schuller and Graham:
RS—“...what do you think is the future of Christianity?”
BG—“Well, Christianity and being a true believer, you know, I think there’s the Body of Christ. This comes from all the Christian groups around the world.” So far, so good for Graham. Now he introduces this un-Scriptural heresy: “Outside the Christian groups, I think everybody who knows Christ, WHETHER THEY ARE CONSCIOUS OF IT OR NOT, they’re members of the Body of Christ.” Sheer religious BULL! This is “DEMON TALK”!
Graham goes on to speak of Muslims and Buddhists that are “Christians.” I don’t recall, even in all my readings over the years, where Muslims or Buddhists claim to be “Christian” as we understand the term. Lately, Graham has added Jews and practicing homosexuals. He is quoted as saying, “...I think they are SAVED, and that they are going to be in heaven with us.” Really, Dr. Graham, just where in the entire Bible do we ever find such a statement?
To Billy Graham, Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Jews, homosexuals and other LOST souls are part of God’s Body! Graham may say this, but the Word of God NEVER even hints at such a rash, unfounded statement.
But Graham contradicts himself in McCall’s magazine (1978) in an article entitled “I Can’t Play God Anymore” (but he still plays God at 90 today!). The magazine has this to say of Billy Graham:
“Graham once believed that Jews, too, were lost if they did not CONVERT to Christianity. Today Graham is willing to leave that up to God. Billy is particularly opposed to evangelical groups such as ‘Jews for Jesus’ who have made Jews the special target for their proselytizing efforts . . . ‘If a person wants to convert to Christianity, that is his own freewill decision,‘ Billy declares . . . ‘I would never go after someone just because he is a Jew, which is why I have never supported the Jewish missions.” What? Billy Graham is supposed to be the world’s greatest evangelist, and here we have him condemning those who want to see the Jews (or any others) receive eternal life.
So he said, “I think everybody who knows Christ, whether they are conscious of it or not, they’re members of the Body of Christ,” making it seem as though one MUST BE part of the Body of Christ to be saved, and yet also says that Jews (and others) don’t have to be members of the Body of Christ but can remain members of the Old Covenant Law and yet be saved. I think Mr. Graham is BACKSLID AS HELL to make such a stupid statement!
Pray tell me how one “who knows Christ” cannot be “conscious of it”? When someone witnessed to me about Jesus Christ, I believed and received! Billy Baby wants to play it SAFE—with everyone. You can have Christ, Billy says, although you “may not even know the name of Jesus,” as he told ol’ Schuller in an interview (see Calvary Contender, Oct. 15, 1997, vol. 14, no. 20, p. 2).
Enter Tony Campolo
TONY CAMPOLO is a staunch liberal who is for “gay rights” (see his book 20 Hot Potatoes Christians Are Afraid To Touch) and was also ex-prez Clinton’s “spiritual advisor” (no wonder prez. Clinton was such a basket case in a presidential role!). In an interview with the Edmonton Journal (Alberta Canada), he was asked by the paper, “Do you believe non-Christians can go to heaven?” Campolo replied, “...we do not know who Jesus will bring into the Kingdom and who He will not.” He believes Jesus lives in everyone! He stated that Christ “actually is present in each one” (see The Conspirators’ Hierarchy: The Committee of 300, 1994, p. 248; Gary Koh, En Route to Global Occupation, 1992, p. 56).
Of course Billy and Tony are buddies. Both are far from being genuine Christians! They are members of the STINKING ROTTING CORPSE (if you don’t have them, write for both of our booklets by that name). Billy has many friends who are nowhere near being Christian; but to Billy, they are “part of the Body of Christ” anyway!

ONE WRITER said, “ The idea that someone might be saved who doesn’t know Jesus might sound wise and compassionate, but it is plainly refuted by Scripture and is therefore a fool’s dream.” Right on!
The Holy Scripture tells us who and who will NOT go into heaven. For instance, Paul, in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, answers this for us. Look it up! I have just written over 300 pages against the homosexual argument wherein they try to prove that verse 9 doesn’t list homosexuals. To them, they (want to) believe that God made them “that way,” so why would they be eliminated? They (want to) believe that God has changed His mind about THAT ABOMINATION! “Fools dream” too.
Jesus Said...
“EXCEPT A man be born again, he CANNOT SEE (or enter) the Kingdom of God” (Jn. 3:3, 5). Evangelist Billy Graham must have cut his spiritual teeth on these two texts, but now...
Try John 3:16 on also. One must believe on (in) Jesus, and one must repent of his/her sins in order to get eternal life. Therefore, if a sinner does not consciously believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, sent to save sinners, he or she is CONDEMNED (see v. 36). How can any Bible teacher, evangelist, pastor, etc., not understand this?

IN SABBATICAL Journey, 1998, p. 51, Nouwen, an “emerging Church” sweetheart, said, “Today I personally believe that while Jesus came to open the door to God’s house, ALL human beings can walk through that door, whether they know about Jesus or not. Today I see it as my call to help every person CLAIM his or her OWN WAY to God.” Brilliant sounding, but FALSE!
St. John (10th chapter) has Jesus saying, “He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up SOME OTHER WAY, the same is a THIEF . . . Then said Jesus unto them . . . I AM THE DOOR of the sheep . . . I AM THE DOOR: by ME if any man enter in, HE SHALL BE SAVED . . .” (Jn. 10:1, 7, 9). Have dear ol’ Billy and friends read this?
Straight Gate
ONE MUST recognize the gate which one is to enter. How foolish to encourage a lost soul—one who is seeking salvation—to just pick any ol’ gate to pass thru, as if any ol’ gate will suit, when only one leads to eternal life. Jesus states in Matthew 7:13, “Enter ye in at the straight gate,” but Jesus also warns of the broad way that leads to destruction. Then Jesus warns of false prophets—like Graham and wolves!—that appear to be of the sheepfold (v. 15). Check out verse 21 also. Nouwen errs in saying that people can claim their own way.
Is It Possible?

To most, the Collinwood Rail Yard in East Cleveland is a disused pit of rusted steel. But to the hobo known as Texas Madman (real name Jon Macleod) and many other rail riders, it’s a place of vibrant possibility, a starting point for travel across the continent.
Texas spent more than 30 years hoboing — living and working on the road — before entering semiretirement and settling in East Cleveland. He grew up in central Texas and started riding the rails at age 13. Since then, he’s traveled to nearly every state and much of Canada. He was even married for a time and has two sons in their mid-20s.
But he’s quick to point out that hoboing isn’t all boxcars and campouts. A life on the road is fraught with peril. Texas, 51, has survived several attempts on his life, two train derailments, a heart attack and an incident in Tennessee in which he beat a thief with a train’s brake hose for nearly 45 minutes, earning him his moniker.
Texas will also tell you that hoboing can be a beautiful way to live — moving across the country unencumbered, with everything you need in your pack and your mind.
“You’re experiencing the ultimate of freedom: freedom of movement, the ability to just get up and move whenever you feel like,” he says.
This month, Texas and other rail riders are helping the Summit County Metro Parks plan its annual hobo gathering in Peninsula, where those who enjoy hobo culture get together, camp out and trade stories. And with nearly four decades of wisdom, some of which Texas has compiled in his self-distributed “Autobiography of a Hobo Tramp,” we asked him to share what he’s learned from years of riding the rails.— Chuck Bowen The people who you meet out there are not always what they appear to be. Sometimes they are sincere, [but] some of them are a lot like your street hustlers … [they only want to] pawn you around and use you for their amusement and their financial ability. When you aren’t any use to them, they’ll throw you out like yesterday’s garbage.
Waste is the biggest crime America commits on a daily basis. … People buy clothes, in two months they go out of style, [so they] throw them away. ... Electronics go out of style every year. Food waste is the worst.
Much of what I’ve eaten later in life was an acquired taste, like dandelion greens, which are spring sprouts that can be picked and cooked like spinach, or cattail tubers. In the spring, the young cattail shoots will sprout through the water. They can be cut and fried and have a sweet flavor. In the late summer, cattails will pollinate — the pollen can be collected and used for flour; it has a high protein and vitamin content.
It’s a cold, mean world outside and that world is whatever you make it. Society is not going to do anything for you; you’ve got to do all that yourself. … You give people a helping hand. You also watch the people you’re dealing with. … A lot of people are out to use you. I mean seriously, at almost any stage of life — not just me hoboing — it’s hard to find a real neighbor anymore.

`Boxcar Killer' Jon Mac Leod convicted in Kansas
Man already sentenced in Oregon slayings

The so-called ``Boxcar Killer,'Jon Mac Leod' linked to a series of hobo killings
in seven
states, including Washington, pleaded guilty Wednesday to first-degree murder
and was sentenced to life in prison for the bludgeoning death of a man at a
state park.
Before he was sentenced by Ellsworth County District Judge Barry Bennington,
Jon Mac Leod, apologized to relatives of Charles Randall Boyd, who was
beaten to death in a collapsed tent at Kanopolis Lake's South Shore State Park.
Court records show Boyd, who was in his 40s, met Jon Mac Leod in El Paso, Texas,
while Boyd was building a bunk house for a youth ranch managed by Christ is the
Answer Mission. Jon Mac Leod returned with him to the ranch and later traveled
with
him to Kansas.
When Boyd's body was discovered in July 1995, Jon Mac Leod was nowhere to be
found.
Also missing were Boyd's identification, personal belongings and vehicle.
Jon Mac Leod was arrested by a railroad police officer eight months later in
Auburn,
Calif. He had Boyd's credit cards with him, prosecutors said.
The judge ordered Jon Mac Leod to serve his sentence consecutive to two life
sentences, both without parole, that he already faces in Oregon for his
convictions of two killings there.
A serial killer provision in the Kansas death penalty statute allows capital
murder charges for the premeditated killing of more than one person in two or
more acts.
But Ellsworth County prosecutor Joe Shepack said he did not pursue the death
penalty because of limited resources.
``Part of it is cost. Part of it is not necessarily dollars and cents, it's
applying fairly stretched law enforcement resources and prosecutorial resources
elsewhere,'' Shepack said Wednesday night in a telephone interview. ``Do I feel
comfortable with three or four life sentences? Yes.''
After his arrest in California, Jon Mac Leod was ultimately linked to more than
a
dozen homicides in seven states during a
15-year period.
Most victims were killed in their sleep for their identification and other
belongings. Police say Jon Mac Leod used birth certificates, Social Security
cards
and the names of his victims to obtain food stamps and other public assistance.
Oregon prosecutors were the first to file charges against Jon Mac Leod, accusing
him
of robbing and killing William Avis Pettit, 39, of Salem on Dec. 1, 1995.
Pettit's battered body was found in a boxcar.
In Florida, Jon Mac Leod is accused of killing Willie Clark, 52.
It was uncertain Wednesday whether Florida officials would seek Jon Mac Leod's
immediate extradition or if Jon Mac Leod would return to Oregon.
Boxcar serial killer' pleads guilty

Jon Mac Leod A boxcar-riding transient who confessed to killing more
than a dozen men in railroad yards across the country has formally pleaded
guilty to two slayings in Oregon and will soon be on his way to prosecution in
Kansas or Florida. Jon Mac Leod, 38, was arrested in Roseville by an
alert railroad cop in March 1996 and, during a 10-day stay in the Placer County
jail, provided investigators from seven states with enough detailed information
about a series of homicides to become known as the "boxcar serial killer."
That description was solidified when Jon Mac Leod tearfully pleaded guilty
before
Marion County, Ore., Circuit Court Judge James Rhoades to the December 1995
aggravated murders of William A. Pettit, 39, and Michael A. Clites, 24.
In a prepared statement read to the judge Jan. 31, Jon Mac Leod wept as he
admitted
causing the deaths of both men by beating them for the purpose of robbing them.
Pettit's body was found in a parked boxcar on Dec.
3, 1995, in Millersburg, Ore., and Clites' was discovered in a freight car near
Portland, Ore., on Dec. 6, 1995.
The judge promptly sentenced Jon Mac Leod to two consecutive terms of life
imprisonment without the possibility of parole, and because of his pleas, he may
not appeal the judgment, according to prosecuting attorney Diana Moffat.
A hearing will be conducted Feb. 16 to determine if Jon Mac Leod is willing to
waive
extradition to Ellsworth County, Kan., or to Tallahassee, Fla., which have filed
warrants charging him with murder in their jurisdictions.
In Kansas, Jon Mac Leodis alleged to have killed Charles Boyd, 46, in Kanopolis
State Park on July 28, 1995. In Florida, he is charged with the April 28, 1994,
bludgeoning of Willie Clark, 52.
According to Moffat and the chief investigator on the case, Mike Quakenbush of
the Salem, Ore., Police Department, solid evidence also links Jon Mac Leod to
the
April 9, 1989, beating death of Anthony Garcia,
62, in West Sacramento; the Aug. 2, 1994, killing of Michael A. Garfinkle, 20,
in Emeryville; the April 21, 1995, homicide of Roger Bowman, 38, in Salt Lake
City; and the Oct. 15,
1995, slaying of Paul W. Matthews, 43, in a hobo camp outside Whitefish, Mont.
While Jon Mac Leod's statements permitted detectives to clear those homicides,
formal charges have not yet been filed and may never be.
Another dozen or more killings were addressed by Jon Mac Leod during his stay in
the
Placer County jail, but there is insufficient evidence to confirm his
involvement

In 1994, after Democrats lost control of the Senate, Senator Joe Lieberman called a press conference with his colleague Tom Harkin to announce their plan to reform the filibuster. "[People] are fed up--frustrated and fed up and angry about the way in which our government does not work," Lieberman said. "And I think the filibuster has become not only in reality an obstacle to accomplishment here, but it is also a symbol of a lot that ails Washington today." Lieberman and Harkin's proposal to weaken the filibuster came to a floor vote and was overwhelmingly defeated by both parties.
Recently it was this same Joe Lieberman, now officially an independent but with a coveted committee chairmanship given to him by his Democratic colleagues, who announced he would use that very same filibuster to stop 35 million people from getting health insurance if there was any public option offered within the health reform legislation. As he no doubt expected, his grandstanding earned him an invitation onto Face the Nation, where he repeated his threat.
If there's a consistency to be found here, it's that in both cases, Lieberman seemed to take a delight in undermining the legislative priorities of his ostensible allies in the Democratic caucus. But the problem isn't so much that Lieberman is wrong now (though, of course, he is). The problem is that he was right then.
The filibuster has become a cancer growing inside the world's greatest deliberative body. What was once a rarely invoked procedural mechanism has metastasized and turned into a de facto supermajority requirement for any legislation. In the 103rd Congress (1993-94) there were forty-six votes on "cloture," the motion to override a filibuster and allow something to be considered on the floor. In the last Congress, the 110th, the first one in which Republicans were in the minority, there were a record 112. Even without the filibuster, our system already has more choke points where legislation can die than almost any other liberal democracy. It's rare for one party to control both houses of Congress and the White House, and to have as solid a majority as the Democrats currently do. But the filibuster confers such power on an obstinate minority that it distorts the relationship between elections and governance in a way that dangerously attenuates democracy itself.
The filibuster may seem like an arcane procedural issue to rail on about (we've already published excellent articles about it in these pages by William Greider and Thomas Geoghegan), but it has serious substantive results. America desperately needs a twenty-first-century social democratic reformation, but no such thing is in the offing as long as the filibuster remains in place. As I write this, there are almost certainly fifty-one votes in the Senate for a healthcare reform bill with a public option and good subsidies, the Employee Free Choice Act, and cap and trade. But there aren't sixty votes for any of those.
The filibuster has been reformed before, most recently when the Democratic majority in 1975 voted to bring the requirement to end debate from sixty-seven votes to sixty. As a constitutional issue, the Senate makes its own rules, which means a simple majority vote can change them. It was, after all, Republicans who made this identical argument in 2005 when they threatened to use the "nuclear option" to override Democratic filibusters of their judicial nominees.
Jane Hamsher, the founder of liberal blog FireDogLake.com, said in an interview Tuesday that the liberal base is "worried" about the Obama administration and may "stay home" in the 2010 midterm elections.
Hamsher compared the current situation to the 1994 elections, when, she said, the Democratic base (including union members) was demoralized and disengaged following the passage of The North American Free Trade Agreement. Republicans took control of both the House and Senate in that contest.
She argued that the Obama administration is paying little attention to its base even as the opposition gins up support among the Republican base with events like the Tea Party protests.
"If you're suppressing your base, and the other side is revving up theirs, and midterm elections are all about turning out the base, I sort of question what their strategy is here," she said.
Hamsher has signed on to a financial boycott of the Democratic National Committee, Organizing for America (the DNC-run operation to mobilize Obama supporters) and the Obama campaign. The boycott was organized by Americablog's John Aravosis and Joe Sudbay over what they see as President Obama and his party's failure to keep its commitments to the gay and lesbian community.

8:06 a.m. Crumple and dispose of the piece of paper with his telephone number on it when you get to the kitchen.
8:07 a.m. Make a high protein breakfast while watching the Today show. Wonder if the stories you've heard about Matt Lauer are true. Decide they must be.
8:30 a.m. Italian or domestic? Decide to go with three-button Italian and the only shirt that is clean.
8:45 a.m. Climb into red Z4 and try not to look too much like Barbie driving one of her accessories as you pull out of your underground parking. Revos or Armanis? Go with Revos.
9:35 a.m. Stroll into office.
9:36 a.m. Close door to office and call best friend and laugh about the guy who spent the night at your condo. Point out something annoying about best friend's boyfriend but quickly add "It doesn't matter what everyone else thinks, just as long as you love him."
10:15 a.m. Leave office, telling your secretary you are "meeting with a client." Pretend not to notice her insubordinate roll of her eyes (or the cloying "poem" she has tacked to her cubicle wall).
10:30 a.m. Hair appointment for lowlights and cut. Purchase of Aveda anti-humectant pomade.

American firm in Bosnia sex trade row poised to win MoD contract
The American defence contractor forced to pay compensation to a UN police officer unfairly dismissed for reporting colleagues involved in the Bosnian sex trade is poised to be awarded its first contract by the British government, the Guardian has learned.
DynCorp, which was ordered to pay the sacked UN investigator Kathryn Bolkovac £110,000 by an employment tribunal on Tuesday, is part of a consortium that is set to be awarded preferred bidder status by the Ministry of Defence to supply support services for military firing ranges.
Ms Bolkovac was dismissed after revealing that UN peacekeepers went to nightclubs where girls as young as 15 were forced to dance naked and have sex with customers, and that UN personnel and international aid workers were linked to prostitution rings in the Balkans. The employment tribunal accepted that Ms Bolkovac, an American who was employed by DynCorp and contracted to the UN, had been dismissed for whistleblowing. She said the company wanted her removed because her work was threatening its "lucrative contract" to supply officers to the mission.

Craig Spence is found dead in a Boston hotel room. Near his body is a newspaper clipping that details legislative efforts to protect CIA agents called to testify before government bodies. Friends of Spence reported that he had claimed the CIA used the call boy service to compromise other federal intelligence officials and foreign diplomats. One friend quoted Spence as saying, "Casey's boys are out to get me,"

In which we learn how slow had been the federal investigation into the allegations swirling around Craig Spence. Spence himself had been handed a subpoena more than two months before his death, but was never called to testify. Officials of the Reagan and Bush administrations, identified in The Times as having used the call-boy service, had not even been contacted by law enforcement officials. One witness reported: "They asked me what I thought Spence wanted to know about the Delta project."

Returning full circle to the Mingo case, we find the newly appointed medical examiner of Mingo County arguing that the fact that she is a physician argues in favor of her having the position over the previous nominee, a funeral home owner. Shafer argues: "A physician has nothing to gain from a suicide. A mortician does. He would probably process the body for burial," she said. "I don't think it's [the funeral industry] a charity business." Ironically, Shafer's "husband" is Henry Vinson, a former mortician and coroner who is linked, as we saw above, to the child sex ring scandals. We also learn that his lawyer is the legal commentator Greta van Susteren.
notwithstanding the fact that modern observation almost invariably shows that the virile power diminishes in exact proportion to the extent of duplication. Taylor *[757] quotes a description of a monster, exhibited in London, with two distinct penises, but with only one distinct testicle on either side. He could exercise the function of either organ.
Schenck, Schurig, Bartholinus, Loder, and Ollsner report instances of diphallic terata; the latter case 5.57 was in a soldier of Charles VI., twenty-two years old, who applied to the surgeon for a bubonic affection, and who declared that he passed urine from the orifice of the left glans and also said that he was incapable of true coitus. Valentini mentions an instance in a boy of four, in which the two penises were superimposed. Bucchettoni 5.58 speaks of a man with

two penises placed side by side. There was an anonymous case described 5.59 of a man of ninety-three with a penis which was for more than half its length divided into two distinct members, the right being somewhat larger than the left. From the middle of the penis up to the symphysis only the lower wall of the urethra was split. Jenisch 5.60 describes a diphallic infant, the offspring of a woman of twenty-five who had been married five years. Her first child was a well-formed female, and the second, the infant in question, cried much during the night, and several times vomited dark-green matter. In lieu of one penis there

were two, situated near each other, the right one of natural size and the left larger, but not furnished with a prepuce. Each penis had its own urethra, from which dribbled urine and some meconium. There was a

duplication of each scrotum, but only one testicle in each, and several other minor malformations (Fig. 61).
Goré, reported by Velpeau, 5.61 has seen an infant of eight and one-half months with two penises and three lower extremities. The penises were 4 cm. apart and the scrotum divided, containing one testicle in each side. Each penis was provided with a urethra, urine being discharged from both simultaneously. In a similar case, spoken of by Geoffroy-Saint-Hilaire, the two organs were also separate, but urine and semen escaped sometimes from one, sometimes from both.

The most celebrated of all the diphallic terata was Jean Baptista dos Santos, who when but six months old was spoken of by Acton. His father and mother were healthy and had two well-formed children. He was easily born after an uneventful pregnancy. He was good-looking, well proportioned, and had two distinct penises, each as large as that of a child of six months. Urination proceeded simultaneously from both penises; he had also two scrotums. Behind and between the legs there was another limb, or rather two, united throughout their length. It was connected to the pubis by a short stem 1/2 inch long and as large as the little

finger, consisting of separate bones and cartilages. There was a patella in the supernumerary limb on the anal aspect, and a joint freely movable. This compound limb had no

power of motion, but was endowed with sensibility. A journal in London, 5.62 after quoting Acton's description, said that the child had been exhibited in Paris, and that the surgeons advised operation. Fisher, 5.63 to whom we are indebted for an exhaustive work in Teratology, received a report from Havana in July, 1865, which detailed a description of Santos at twenty-two years of age, and said that he was possessed of extraordinary animal passion, the sight of a female alone being sufficient to excite him. He was said to use both penises, after finishing with one continuing with the other; but this account of him does not agree with later descriptions, in which no excessive sexual ability had been noticed. Hart 5.64 describes the adult Santos in full, and accompanies his article with an illustration. At this time he was said to have developed double genitals, and possibly a double bladder communicating by an imperfect septum. At adulthood the anus was three inches anterior to the os coceygeus. In the sitting or lying posture the supernumerary limb rested on the front of the inner surface of the lower third of his left thigh. He was in the habit of wearing this limb in a sling, or bound firmly to the right thigh, to prevent its unseemly dangling when erect. The perineum proper was absent, the entire space between the anus and the posterior edge of the scrotum being occupied by the pedicle. Santos' mental and physical functions were developed above normal, and he impressed everybody with his accomplishments. Geoffroy-Saint-Hilaire records an instance in which the conformation was similar to that of Santos. There was a third lower extremity consisting of two limbs fused into one with a single foot containing ten distinct digits. He calls the case one of arrested twin development.
Van Buren and Keyes 5.65 describe a case in a man of forty-two, of good, healthy appearance. The two distinct penises of normal size were apparently well formed and were placed side by side, each attached at its root to the symphysis. Their covering of skin was common as far as the base of the glans; at this point they seemed distinct and perfect, but the meatus of the left was imperforate. The right meatus was normal, and through it most of the urine passed, though some always dribbled through an opening in the perineum at a point where the root of the scrotum should have been. On lifting the double-barreled penis this opening could be seen and was of sufficient size to admit the finger. On the right side of the aperture was an elongated and rounded prominence similar in outline to a labium majus. This prominence contained a testicle normal in shape and sensibility, but slightly undersized, and surrounded, as was evident from its mobility, by a tunica vaginalis. The left testicle lay on the tendon of the adductor longus in the left groin; it was not fully developed, but the patient had sexual desires, erections, and emissions. Both penises became erect simultaneously,

the right more vigorously. The left leg was shorter than the right and congenitally smaller; the mammæ were of normal dimensions.
Sangalli 5.66 speaks of a man of thirty-five who had a supernumerary penis, furnished with a prepuce and capable of erection. At the apex of the glans opened a canal about 12 cm. long, through which escaped monthly a serous fluid. Smith 5.67 mentions a man who had two penises and two bladders, on one of which lithotomy was performed. According to Ballantyne, Taruffi, the scholarly observer of terata, mentions a child of forty-two months and height of 80 cm. who had two penises, each furnished with a urethra and well-formed scrotal sacs which were inserted in a fold of the groin. There were two testicles felt in the right scrotum and one in the left. Fecal evacuations escaped through two anal orifices. There is also another case mentioned similar to the foregoing in a man of forty; but here there was an osseous projection in the middle line behind the bladder. This patient said that erection was simultaneous in both penises, and that he had not married because of his chagrin over his deformity. Cole 5.68 speaks of a child with two well-developed male organs, one to the left and the other to the right of the median line, and about 1/4 or 1/2 inch apart at birth. The urethra bifurcated in the perineal region and sent a branch to each penis, and urine passed from each meatus. The scrotum was divided into three compartments by two raphes, and each compartment contained a testicle. The anus at birth was imperforate, but the child was successfully operated on, and at its sixtieth day weighed 17 pounds.
Lange 5.69 says that an infant was brought to Karg for relief of anal atresia when fourteen days old. It was found to possess duplicate penises, which communicated each to its distinct half of the bladder as defined by a median fold. The scrotum was divided into three portions by two raphes, and each lateral compartment contained a fully formed testicle. This child died because of its anal malformation, which we notice is a frequent associate of malformations or duplicity of the penis. There is an example in an infant described 5.70 in which there were two penises, each about 1/2 inch long, and a divided scrotal sac 21 inches long. Englisch 5.71 speaks of a German of forty who possessed a double penis of the bifid type.
Ballantyne and his associates define diphallic terata as individuals provided with two more or less well-formed and more or less separate penises, who may show also other malformations of the adjoining parts and organs (e. g., septate bladder), but who are not possessed of more than two lower limbs. This definition excludes, therefore, the cases in which in addition to a double penis there is a supernumerary lower extremity -- such a case, for example, as that of Jean Baptista dos Santos, so frequently described by teratologists. It also excludes the more evident double terata, and, of course, the cases of

duplication of the female genital organs (double clitoris, vulva, vagina, and uterus). Although Schurig, Meckel, Himly, Taruffi, and others give bibliographic lists of diphallic terata, even in them erroneous references are common, and there is evidence to show that many cases have been duplicated under different names. Ballantyne and Skirving 5.72 have consulted all the older original references available and eliminated duplications of reports and, adhering to their original definition, have collected and described individually 20 cases; they offer the following conclusions: --
1. Diphallus, or duplication of the penis in an otherwise apparently single individual, is a very rare anomaly, records of only 20 cases having been found in a fairly exhaustive search through teratologic literature. As a distinct and well-authenticated type it has only quite recently been recognized by teratologists.
2. It does not of itself interfere with intrauterine or extrauterine life; but the associated anomalies (e. g., atresia ani) may be sources of danger. If not noticed at birth, it is not usually discovered till adult life, and even then the discovery is commonly accidental.
3. With regard to the functions of the pelvic viscera, urine may be passed by both penises, by one only, or by neither. In the last instance it finds exit by an aperture in the perineum. There is reason to believe that semen may be passed in the same way; but in most of the recorded cases there has been sterility, if not inability to perform the sexual act.
4. All the degrees of duplication have been met with, from a fissure of the glans penis to the presence of two distinct penises inserted at some distance from each other in the inguinal regions.
5. The two penises are usually somewhat defective as regards prepuce, urethra, etc.; they may lie side by side, or more rarely may be situated anteroposteriorly; they may be equal in size, or less commonly one is distinctly larger than the other; and one or both may be perforate or imperforate.
6. The scrotum may be normal or split; the testicles, commonly two in number, may be normal or atrophic, descended or undescended; the prostate may be normal or imperfectly developed, as may also the vasa deferentia and vesiculæ seminales.
7. The commonly associated defects are: More or less completely septate bladder, atresia ani, or more rarely double anus, double urethra, increased breadth of the bony pelvis with defect of the symphysis pubis, and possibly duplication of the lower end of the spine, and hernia of some of the abdominal contents into a perineal pouch. Much more rarely, duplication of the heart, lungs, stomach, and kidneys has been noted, and the lower limbs may be shorter than normal.
CLASS XI. -- Cases of fetus in fetu, those strange instances in which one might almost say that a man may be pregnant with his brother or sister, or in

which an infant may carry its twin without the fact being apparent, will next be discussed. The older cases were cited as being only a repetition of the process by which Eve was born of Adam. Figure 63 represents an old engraving showing the birth of Eve. Bartholinus, the Ephemerides, Otto, Paullini, Schurig, and Plot speak of instances of fetus in fetu. Ruysch 5.73 describes a tumor contained in the abdomen of a man which was composed of hair, molar teeth, and other evidences of a fetus. Huxham reported to the Royal Society in 1748 the history of a child which was born with a tumor near the anus larger than the whole body of the child; this tumor contained rudiments of an embryo. Young 5.74 speaks of a fetus which lay encysted between the laminæ of the transverse mesocolon, and Highmore published a report of a fetus in a cyst communicating with the duodenum. Dupuytren gives an example in a boy of thirteen, in whom was found a fetus. Gaetano-Nocito, cited by Philipeaux, *[302] has the history of a taken with a great pain in the right hypochondrium, and from which issued subsequently fetal bones and a mass of macerated embryo. His mother had had several double pregnancies, and from the length of the respective tibiæ one of the fetuses seemed to be of two months' and the other of three months' intrauterine life. The man died five years after the abscess had burst spontaneously.
