As far as I can tell, there have been TWO conspiracy theories advanced to explain the events of that day: the government's and the cynic's. Neither has met the necessary burden of proof. Both do address, however, the three factors key to identifying likely criminal suspects; means, motive and opportunity. One reason I think the cynic's theory persists is because, to their minds at least, The US Government trumps Al Qaeda in at least two of the three. The primary reason the Government's does is because, well, it's the Government's. To too many people that's all that's really required.
The thing is though, nowadays, we don't seem all that predisposed to needing proof. Look how easily our government was able to conflate 9/11 with an imperative to wage war on Iraq. Had we never travelled down that road I don't think the cynic's theory would have gotten as much traction as it has.
