This modified H28 ketch is a Far East 29, built in Yokosuka, Japan in 1963. The Far East modifications are 8” more freeboard and a doghouse, that together give 6’3” headroom. They raised the mainmast 2’9”, added a bowsprit, and gave her a masthead rig. She has a copper riveted, double-diagonal planked hull that is in excellent condition. To my knowledge, she has never been out of the water for more than ten days, thus avoiding the problems that come with a double planked hull drying out and leaking, which she does not do. The masts have been raked and the chainplates mounted outside the hull to give her a more traditional look. The oak rudder has been refastened and encapsulated. I am in the process of restoring her and she still needs work, but most of the important work has already been done. The cockpit has been completely rebuilt with a bridge deck and raised seats, to give better visibility over the cabin. The cockpit, deck and cabin roof have been covered with nylon fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin, which extends over the gunwales. The oak toe rail has been refastened with silicone bronze screws into epoxy, to avoid the problem of water getting down between the hull planking. The garboard has been completely refastened with silicone bronze. I am presently restoring the mahogany cabin sides with an epoxy sealer and varnish. She still needs some cosmetics, an engine, and to have her keel bolts replaced. She has a cast iron external keel. I just installed a natural gas stove/oven and CNG tank. The interior is in excellent condition. I will sell her for $8,000 as is, or increase the price as the restoration continues. I just sailed her from San Diego to Santa Barbara and she sailed beautifully. She is light and responsive and has an amazingly gentle motion in rough seas, taking almost no spray over the rails.
